If need be you can tune settings down if the combat is too difficult.
I go in to Fortresses and holy ruins solo with no followers just fine on default settings.
Bosses can be a struggle but if you learn the mechanics they can be done they just wont be done in a short amount of time its like a MMO raid boss but solo you may be at it for 15-20 minutes.
Just two mods on Nexus so far. One kind of odd one:

clearly you have not yet try the game as a solo player, sure if you tonedown the sliders all the way, easy stuff gets stupidly easy, hard stuff gets easy and bosses type 2 and 3 ... well they still suck and will kill you in a few hits, and then there is the "what i call" BS systems, the enemy's "now your dead no matter what" attack, to name a few anaconda, lion pounce, vulture pick up and drop from high place. i'm sure i will come across more BS systems.
Yes, Single Player is a constant "what the heck" sort of experience every day. I figure one thing out, deal with it, then the next day I'm in adjusting settings trying to deal with something else.
Why do they even have a single player mode if the game is just designed for multiplayer? I buy the game because it has single player, but find it really doesn't work that well in that mode. I don't have the time to maintain a base solo 24/7, so want to start the game and play when I want, and have things were I last left them. I really don't have the time for online playing a game.
Ah, I had the filter on (I think it is on by default). But really, a mod that makes you naked when you have no armor on. I can see that being interesting if you are 13.
Against any boss is basically better to go alone. My level 50 red companion with +9% def and -60% damage taken with bronze gear would die to level 35 Bear.
Gonna test that with iron gear tomorrow, but i think he ain't survive.
Elite Bear? he ate me up and my comp. First time did'nt know about his gnarl attack.
Forget difficulty, moving base is just pure pain and a massive timesink as a solo player. Being able to move multiple tribesmen at once would be a massive QoL improvement.
Not even Elite, just a Bear, but i tested him solo without me, we killed that Bear later together but still he left with like 200 HP when he has 2.2k he would have died solo but with his stats and level and gear he shouldn't be dying solo.
For additional companions, for solo I'm with you, a second mate would be great. but for multiplayer and especially pvp it would most likely cause havoc for the combat system.
I'm just afraid that, at least with the current way of giving the tribesmen commands while deployed, that it will be a good chunk of work to get more than one companion running, especially UI/UX would most likely need a proper makeover.
