I avoid using the llama as much as possible. They are zero fun to ride. They are slower than everything else. They are bigger and slower to turn. They can not jump. The only time I use them is to carry tribesmen or animals. Once my base was set up and I have decent tribesmen to work with and level for now... I stopped using them. As I get farther in the game and eventually try to go for the best tribesman, I might use them again... but now they just stand around and eat food all day, every day.
I've gone clear across the map 3000+ m with the llama several times and never even nearly got stuck on anything. Go around or dismount and climb over/down.
If you are just exploring or doing small trips the panther is perfect. The llama is more for doing resource runs or taming runs because it has 1500 carry weight and can transport barbarians and animals.
