What am I doing wrong. Trying to catch a llama?
I have 4 medium traps. All of them have llama food in them. The baby and young llamas walk circles around them. they are literally surrounded by traps. I've watched from a distance for 3 in-game days. No catches.

Llama food is for when u have the babies and want them to grow up, aka faster = better food.

kill the parents. this rule i use with anything i want to trap. the parents will trigger your trap and eat the food so they must go first.

amusingly, if you get the angle right, you can just chase the babies into the traps...no bait needed.

bait is more "hands off"....I came back to where my traps were after taming my first Llama and my traps had 2 more babies caught - but the first one I caught by scaring into a trap when it just wouldn't walk in on its own.

Like people said before, you can either kill or scare the parents. Each trap "attracts" only 1 thing at a time, so if a parents is locked in, it will just trigger the trap and do nothing. So if you see a parent walking to the trap, just shoot an arrow or spear to make it run away and free the trap for the baby to lock in.

One interesting thing is even with baby animals they are attracted to noise. So if you shoot a bow near enough to the llama they will walk toward where the impact sound was. Same with other baby animals like Jaguars. So you can bait the trap and then lure them closer to it so it doesn't take as long. Also if you shoot the llama parents then they will run away. You don't need to actually kill them to prevent them from "Occupying" the trap so the baby will go to it.
All good advice above, bravi. My lama is my least favorite mount atm and I no longer take it out of base. Yea, the carry a potential recruit is kinda handy but meh; get a recruit all the way back to base and the npc turns out to be poor quality. Yet to be improved game mechanic.
As above, do rotate the trap towards the desired catch. As above, I've caught all my herbivores with corn as bait (well, monkeys like fruit but aren't mounts....yet). As above, do get rid of all adults (kill/scare). As above, do circle around to carefully, herd, the target toward a trap. Note, followers set to f4 will kill everything so keep them far away from trapping or gathering eggs. Haven't used Dezxter's arrow method but it should/could work. Note, for the amount of effort it takes to get a mount, use the Q key to see if the trapped critter is worth keeping, red icon is largest; that said I have a low level snow leopard that I'm keeping as mount size doesn't currently matter. Note, make a couple of saddles so if a saddle wears out and crafting points have been reset no need to spend points on relearning to replace.

A fair bit of good advice in this thread. From my own experiences, this is what I found worked pretty good;

1) kill the adults. I know.../cringe, but it makes for less competition of the food.
2) place the trap, stock it with either corn or corn flour. I've personally not noticed a discernible difference between the two, but I favor corn flour since its a "higher tier good" and i (perhaps mistakenly) assume it has more "value" to the little guys.
3) Waiting/watching is usually around the 2-3 minute mark. Unlike the Jags, you only need one trap as the Alpaca wander around less.
4) Alpaca, Llama, Boar, Turkey, and Capybera all follow the same rule, though are more feed specific. The only one I've had to lay multiple traps for are the Jags.
5) Note about anything that has an egg. I haven't been able to put the eggs in the Llama pet baskets, I had to carry them "by hand" to my base to hatch near the bonfire/campfires. Annoying AF, but it is what it is.

Disclaimer: As of yet, haven't tried Moose or Armadillo yet.
