Levelling mounts

I haven't been able to figure out what the levelling mechanic for mounts are. Nobody I have spoken to knows either. Does anybody here know how it works?

snow leopard and jaguar clubs spawn at your awareness level.
All the others are random

None level up over time

My Ostrich do lvl, but it is not the same as with the others, which is weird.

i am not 100% certain but i think just average use and having them around combat gives them some passive exp.
