Oneshot mechanics is what made me quit.
The anacondas is one thing, you can outrun them, but the cougars just ruined my gameplay experience. I lost my main character and then consecutively the one I sent after his stuff, to a cougar jumping in my back and oneshotting me. No chance to do anything.
I don't mind hard games. I've platinumed Sekiro on playstation, but what I don't like is games that don't give you a fighting chance, AND punish you on top of it, by having to spend another hour re-gearing your toon.
I wasn't undergeared either, I had on all legendary leather stuff, and going to explore a mine that popped up on the map. I had about 900hp, but it didn't matter in the least, rip, shred, dead.
So, in the end it left me with a frustrating gaming experience.

3 Things:

1) Dont go to areas you are not ready for. Once you have decent gear (easily possible after a day or two of playing) you should be able to craft gear good enough. (Good quality Beast Hide)

2) Get the Combat Instinct and Perception Enhancement mask perks upgraded. Then before you are attacked, turn and face the threat to fight it properly.

3) Learn the strategy to fight them. Panthers are easy to fight once you know how. Anacondas are not bad either, once you know how. Yes, you can get out of their grip once they wrap you.

I was wearing legendary leather (the first tier after linen) in all slots + epic ring and necklace and bone 2-hander. My hp was about 900. The cougar just leapt in my back, toppled and stunned me, and just finished me off on the floor. It was over in 5 seconds. Then I went after my gear with an also geared up follower, who had most proficiencies well over 60+. She only had 800hp, and I had the exact same experience. I didn't even reach the spot with the gear, but got jumped 500 meters earlier.
Use a shield. Blocking stops the kd and also stops the hitstun. Then just side strafe and beat the tar out of its head.

Basically for jags you block the leap then stick to them like glue. They cannot pounce from melee range and their melee attacks do not track and have windups; meaning they are easily dodged with lateral movement.

I found with the black cougars, creeping up behind them for the lost gear and then reversing back worked, then avoid that area for a while.

The Jaguars are easy to kill.

everything is easy to kill as long as you attack it from behind / circle it so it can't hit you, but yeah the kill animation of anaconda is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke, first it wraps around you and takes half of your hp no matter what gear you're wearing, then when you're left stunned she gonna grab you with her mouth and finish you off (and not the good kind of way lmao)

Dear DEVS
Have red all thread and I totally believe that some players have found their way with these monsters.
But may be I am not just good enough. But I love survival games, mostly building and life organising part, cannot help it.
Please give a chance to players like me.
After few successful jaguar kills assisted by my tribesmen with 60% taken damage reduction (PVE, normal difficulty), we were in all good gear and shield and my mask mostly repaired I've thought that I've nailed it. Nope...
Suddenly yesterday night I've spent half an hour trying to retrieve my expensive stuff (beast hide gear, beast bone spear and shield, lots of barbarian stuff after a ride in the northern barracks and copper mine, etc). Companion killed in the meantime after my 3 subsequent deaths. He couldn't slay a jaguar alone and it's a stupid and frustrating death circle: action time pauses while you resurrect and returning, but when you approach the scene, their fight resumes, and you helplessly watch from the far your companion getting up after recuperation from the near death state, getting immediately pounced AGAIN by jaguar and, after your few subsequent deaths, he eventually dies, because you are just not close enough to help him to fight.
At the moment you approach closely enough to be able to fight yourself, your tribesmen is already neutralized (or dead) and you are solo and you die again. And again. And again. And after 30 minutes your stuff is gone! It's too short period for a game feathering beasts, who have an ability to kill you instantly.
And after 3-4 deaths no decent gear remains at your camp and you just continue to run back naked, desperately hoping that you will find this damned jaguar far enough from your 5-6 death stacks, scattered through the place...

It's just deadly frustrating and hopeless.

In Conan Exiles you can outrun almost everything, or at least climb a rock or a tree and wait until enemy looses its interest and returns at its spawn place. But in Soulmask they wait for you eternally at the bottom!!!

The only time a predator killed me, was when i was sneaking and suddenly an anaconda dropped from the sky on top me, coiled me and killed me, but geuss that was a bug or the flints had killed it a bit before i got in the area as it was near flint barracks, but no jag could kill me, I even helped a friend with an elite panther who got her by surprise and panther couldn't even get to me as i choose a wise spot to attack it from higher grounds. With the mask skill to see enemies up front this game is somewhat easy to avoid getting killed and eventualy you learn where predators love to run around and can either avoid it or go through it to kill them for mats and fun.

You can always farm leather gears from tribemasters,

One thing about survival game, you don't have to chad up everything, no need to face them head on like you're some hero in the comic books, It is okay to keep distance and be patient, if you happen to get stuck in getting your stuff back, use throwing stone to distract your enemies, let them wander off of your belongings, use them A LOT, or use anything you can throw to distract them, they'll wander off.

I rarely man up mobs, heck I avoid tribemasters like a plague (Hard difficulty). On red leather gears, they hit my head at 400 dmg, but of course I circle around and hit them from when they can't hit me, to call it cowardice would be understatement, it was straight up lame ass ♥♥♥♥ trick I pulled on them, but it works, and the way I pat myself on the back is by calling it, use brain.

And those tribemasters and cats are not the worst thing, I wander off to plunderers nest, I met them on my first beta game, but this time, with difficulty ranked up, they became hard as rock and hit like a truck, but again, circle them and hit them from where they can't hit me. It is lame asf, but once again, it works!

Conan was nice, but Conan has yea,.. that old game feel into it, at least to me, the characters are sexier and with addition of mods, well, CE can be, almost entirely different game.

Good luck surviving!

More likely you were just not high enough of a level. When I first encountered jaguars I was one-shot, as well. Once I made level 20 they became doable, level 25 found me hunting them.

I'm sure there are plenty of others who are better gamers than I am who could take them at lower levels. My friend and his 2H sword spin was killing them at 15. So your stat build is going to play into it, as well. My friend went strength, while I went more agility. Strength definitely won out.
