Best Weapons for Solo Play?

I was using the spear a bit for my first few hours but the big delays in the throw/pull were a issue, also the rapid thrusts can lock you in for a second or so. I switched to sword and shield, been having decent success with that when outnumbered except one of the sword attacks is very slow with a big windup HOWEVER the counterattack is quick and you can sometimes do a full "kill sequence" which looks really cool too.

I also tried the bow but the damage wasn't great (I know you need to aim for the head for max damage) and the greatsword/hammer seem to be way too slow for surviving fights. The enemies can really mess you up if you get knocked down or stunned too. The best approach seems to be quick strikes with a way to guard well.

I haven't been able to unlock many abilities in the weapon trees so I'm hoping to get feedback from people who have, maybe there's some awesome abilities at the rank 30+ skill levels?

BTW: The rank 30 Spear Special Ability seems stupid? It's 3 quick thrusts but you can already do that with the rapid attack... am I missing something?

It's best to carry different weapons. E.g Tortoise that went into heal mode inside its shell, a fully charged hammer attack is the best to kill it at that moment... Or it will be back to full hp. Or anaconda wrap attack, you can still spin to win with the greatsword special attack.

For most cases, high burst and multi-hit weapons like the gauntlet or dual wield sword is good enough. But some situation, like the above, requires you to switch to other weapons for best result.

Also remember you have left click for normal attack and hold down left-click for a charged attack...

spear is very good against humans. need to test the greatsword spin on anacondas though, i hate how they manage to hug you .

how do you do the counter attack? is it like when you perfect block the enemy then just start attacking him?

Spear/shield with a hammer backup for some enemy types has been the way to go for me parry enemies and you can do a full charge attack with the spear and repost, spear basic attack does not animation lock your movement so is the only weapon in the game you can dps with while circle strafing, the throw is great for initiating combat as it pulls enemies towards you, if you don't want to lock yourself into the retrieval animation, just wait 5 seconds and it will come back while dealing damage (but no pull) Hammer is needed for turtles and ''spoilers''. The charge attack stabs are one of the best dps moves in the game, you just need to not use it at the wrong time, but you can dodge out of it after about 1.5 seconds.
