Ostrich mounts - what are they for?

As far as i can tell these are purely for flavor right?
Alpaca serves as the early game mount, which players then move on to jaguars for travel and speed, and llamas for weight and taming purposes.
Do ostriches do something cool?

They can flap and fly a bit when falling and takes significantly less fall damage. Though their carry weight is about 500... They are also resistant to radiation. Also generally fast. Preferred mount for the desert area.

I brought one to the snow area... it froze to death. Guess I'll need to find myself a snow leopard soon.
