How do I fill up the water trough?

You can make a Water Jug with the potting table, press e on a water source to fill it, then put it in your hotbar and equip it like a weapon. Then click to dump the water out into the trough.

Can npcs do this?

The only thing I can think that I can make is a water bottle and a water tank, can't find the jug

the bucket needs copper wire so it's a no go at this point for me
