A few enjoy playing with magic, while most dont like it at all. In Conan Exiles you can achieve all without magic. It still enriched the game in the sense that there is more variety. And that is the idea that also fits a survival game.
However, I agree with you that there was a problem in the PVP community, because PVP lives from a balanced gameplay.
Asymmetrical multiplayer can be a big problem in PVP. The same problem was not only with magic but also with mounted combat and the lance. Its not a problem per se of magic
