PUBLISHER: Qooland Games
It says it on the front of the store page?
I'm just curious as aforementioned in my original post. I'm not here to flame, just here asking if anyone knew who these guys are. Thanks for your understanding. The other post about this same topic was a drama fest and no real intel was shared there either.
I have time to wait.
Snail/Donkey made a game called Bellwright, they were on my avoid list. However they're making a really good game over there. So I gave respect where it was due, even though I wanted to avoid their future games. At least they didn't hide who they were. If this is Tencent though ohh no shot.
This isn't about ego, this isn't about money, this isn't even really about my avoid list. Who you are is like your skin and you can not change that. No matter how many shells you create. People will find out eventually. I'm not trying to be toxic, contrary I want to avoid that type of community. Sometimes that starts with how developers and publishers treat their player base.
Love me some Star Wars but EA and Ubisoft just can't do it right. I've lost faith in their ability thus I have the right to avoid. It's kind of like that for those of you that are curious about my motives.
Qooland Games (allegedly) is working in the same building as Snail Games in Singapore. An old thread on these forums asked this same question.
There's nothing online about this company. The google search gives a TV/Film company (netflix/hulu/etc.) and some indie videogame company that went ghost around 2020 from the US. It's looking asset flipped and their social media posts look like they're filled with bot comments.
Getting "The Day Before" vibes all over again. Lol.
Worried about China specifically, meh not as much as others. The Chinese have a mentality of if you're not cheating you're not trying, I dislike. Most Asian games I've never been a fan of because they adopt P2W and their games are too anime for my liking. For those reasons I would want to know and try and avoid. Make sense? I've only responded to you because you've been level headed in Bellwright community, thus I know you have maturity in you. I try to ignore the others just posting for drama, not interested. I gave you my time of day, show the same respect in return please.
The other thread about this I read through as well, mostly drama fest. I didn't want to be apart of it. I'm just here to find out who the developers and publishers are to help me in making my purchase decision or not. Not here for the drama.
I tried looking as well on google with no avail. In time I suppose it will surface. I asked in any event someone knew something I didn't. Guess we are all in the dark for now. Thanks for looking. As far as the day before vibes, not getting that here. From my observations I actually think there is a game behind Soul Mask.
But do you actually?
Snail Games which owns Wildcard Studio LLC and publishes Ark along with Bellwright are a Chinese company? They are Suzhou Snail Digital Technology Co., Ltd.
Also, Tencent Holdings Inc. has their hands on everything these days, it's actually quite hard to live life without interacting with something that they have invested in.
For instance, have you ever purchased a game by Activision, Ubisoft or perhaps Funcom? Have you ever used Epic Games, Discord, Spotify or Reddit? Well guess what, Tencent Holdings owns shares in all of those among many, many others.
I get that and agree with you there, it does seem that this is a relatively new and small business / indie studio, this game is perhaps their first big hit.
I found this which lists a few of their other projects:
https://store.steampowered.com/developer/Campfire/
And this:
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/CampfireStudio
Which reads:
"Campfire Studio
Two guys making games as a lifestyle"
Perhaps they just didn't want to come across as being some tiny/obscure developer that might not be capable of handling a project of this scale.

Makes me think that whoever SIMA is, it is very likely that they have indeed been involved in the industry for a long time. Perhaps they were working with/for other companies and are tied down to NDA's or other factors which limit them from expressing their involvement in other projects, etc. They seem to be quite proactive so far and are paying attention to feedback and concerns, which is good. That said, I'd like to see how that translates into progress with the game its self.
It is a good and reasonable question that you have asked, it is a bit sus but that doesn't necessarily mean that they have a checkered past.
Perhaps they will respond themselves with more info that might help to clear up the concerns that you have raised.
EDIT: They actually give me a kind of SCUM (Gamepires) vibe, small developer but enthusiastic about what they are doing. SCUM has come a long way even though it received a ton of negative feedback early on, they stuck with it, listened to feedback, made changes and have consistently updated the game to date. I believe they were recently acquired by Jagex which in my mind puts them in a great position in terms of experience and ability to progress with their ideas further into the future.
I don't think that Campfire Studio is related to this developer.
That would be very much appreciated. Just a short introduction who they are and how many people are working on the project.
I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to respond to me.
The companies aforementioned like Snail have shifted in ownership several times now. They weren't always owned by who they are owned by now. Yes I've been here through it all. The fractured beginnings and the lawsuit that almost killed the studio from the get go.
You talk about Tencent owning subsidies in almost every company these days, it's an unfortunate truth. It's hard to avoid. There are games that we have played in the past that once they sold to Tencent and Tencent becoming the majority owner, the game changed drastically. It's this that I aim to avoid. When Tencent becomes majority owner it becomes a bleak time for the gamers. P2W, paywalls everywhere you can look and turn. You know this.
I'm keenly aware of it all and have been in the gaming world for my entire life. It's always been my passion and favorite past time.
I'm leaning more so into the small indy, I've seen several gamers now mention they feel the vibes of phone games in Soul Mask. If I would to guess I would think mobile gaming was their past. You bring up another valid point, one of which I did not consider until you mentioned, maybe some projects are still under NDA. A decade of NDA though, oof.
How did I not find this CampfireStudio page, wow thanks for that.
So this is their biggest ambitious project and they've been super indy before this. Some of this experience is relatable though. Graphics aside.
Ohh that post on May30th I missed that. The Zima background post. Good find, thank you very much.
This is an indy dev team that's making ambitious moves into bigger projects. It's right up my alley to support. I love supporting Indy devs. It's the big AAA companies we've support their growth in the past that become to big for their own good who I boycott. I've got tons of kickstarter and such backings to studios just like this.
Soul Mask has dedicated servers.
Modding support coming soon.
Content filled major DLC in the works. Meh about this but it's industry standards.
WantToTree you've cleared up my suspicions and now I know who they are I feel much better with a purchase and backing a studio that is deserving. Making video games for the passion of what video games offer to the gamers and fans vs profiteering. I humbly offer my sincere gratitude.
Perhaps not, a bit weird as steamdb lists those games along with Soulmask as being their titles: https://steamdb.info/developer/Campfire+Studio/
I did see a few references of the company being based In St. Louis-based, Missouri and based on that info I found: https://gust.com/companies/campfire_studios_llc
EDIT: It mentions that the company was founded in 2012 along with:
Campfire Studios was created by Kyle Richter, who is currently our President and C.E.O., in 2012. Initially, Campfire worked as a white-label developer, producing games for other companies, without attribution. In 2017, the direction was changed and Campfire began working on their own titles, their way (focused on players, not monetization).
Essentially, it ties into my reasoning above about it likely being an indie that is bound by varying factors regarding disclosure of past work although it does seem that they do have a great deal of experience when it comes to games development.
