And casting combat spells outside combat is really not intuitive at all. Most of the time, attempting to do this just brings up a brief description, so there's no reason to think that it might do anything else under some special circumstances. Except, of course, the episode with the jelly cube, when it's pretty natural to attempt it.
This exactly. The game tells you "these spells arent for puzzles" and then requires you to try using one of them for puzzles a couple times... so then you find yourself aimlessly clicking on all of the combat spells for potential puzzle uses. Not a good design.
