How to solve the riddle for the Thieves Den? (Rogue Chapter 1)

I checked a walk-through and I know what to do to enter the thieves den, but I have no idea how to actually solve the riddle.

Ian tells me to read the news and ignore the sermon, however the news are nowhere to be found.

Have you found the entrance? If not, where would there be a sermon? Try using the hand icon on the pulpit in the chapel.

I know I need to press the cross on the pulpit in the pattern " north, east, west, and south".

My question is: how was I supposed to figure out this pattern? Why these four directions? And what is the relation with the "news"?

N = north, E = east, W = west, S = south. So, NEWS tells you the order.
