Hi guys, so my firends and I are playing right now and it seems like we cant really see each other like...I see the steam picture but thats it I cant see the avatar.

For some people its stupid we know but its really not fun to see each others as a picture moving around...

I think it's to signify that your friends aren't actually in your game, but are still with you.
Merry Dec 23, 2014 @ 1:32pm
Well...yea I know that, what I would like to know is if its normal to see your friend as a picture or if there is a way to see him as a character like I see my self, its just so ridiculous to see the picture of your friend jumping around and it feel like you are not playing with him.
You aren't together, you're in different worlds, with different random monsters and loot. The only thing that's the same is level layout, and Identifying stuff.

If you're in the same location within the level, then you can reach through to your friend's world and interact with them by items ONLY.

Perhaps it could show a "ghostly image" of your friend's character, instead of their Steam avatar, but that's just a minor graphical thing; Doesn't affect gameplay in the least.

In Co-op, you should get the same monsters at the same places, unless you loiter in an area for a while, in which case more monsters come and those are more different.

Well playing with the steam picture of my friend is absolutely not interesting, it seems like a minor thing but because of this it seems like you are not playing with him.

Waz can I hope a change in the future ?

Co-op comes from helping each other - warning of upcoming mobs, sharing resources, trading for what's best for each class, saving each other from death.

I've tried a few different ways to do multiplayer roguelike in the past, and while it's not everyone's cup of tea, this is the closest I've come to keeping all the good roguelike things while putting in many of the good co-op things.

Will I try other things? Certainly I'd like to. It's risky to try implementing stuff that might be an utterly useless dead-end though.
Waz it sounds like Merry was exclusively asking about the display of your co-op partner. He wants to see a 3D model instead of just the Steam avatar, I think.

I think the game design of the co-op play is currently great, just the UI needs some improving, especially the chat.

It would be cool to see alternative co-op designs. You could implement them as a new system (Type 2 Co-Op or something like that) and leave the current one intact, that way you don't lose anything.

Yup, all I want is to see my partner, for the moment we dont really want to play the game because we dont feel like we are playing together.

I'd like to see the character model as well. It was a little off-putting the first time I tried MP and just saw the little steam icon representing the character. It's a brilliant way to note the other player's relative position to you when they're not on your screen, but having their character model in the game adds that little extra punch of immersion and atmosphere.

Ah, I follow now! The main reason for using the icons (other than that it is of course simpler to implement) is that I felt it was a bit misleading/confusing to show the actual other player when you're not actually together. A transparent model might work. It'll need more network bandwidth to keep it well-animated, but it should be possible. I'll look into it. No promises, of course.

I second the motion for "type 2 co-op," personally, while I still love the game, when I saw "co-op multiplayer" I just sort of assumed we'd be in the same game, but that's on me for not researching. If it's not too much trouble or ideal breaking, looking into a shared world co-op would be much appreciated! I'd imagine it would be touch to synchronize between eachother when to move and when to not, but that could be the tradeoff for having two guys/their pets.

Hey man, dont get your hope too high on this one, I bought this game for coop only and its not even close to something fun the way it is actually.
I just cant stand the fact that you play like if you and your friend are doing the game pretty much alone but at the same time.
Still waiting for Waz telling us that he finallt did it.
Sugar Khajiit Dec 27, 2020 @ 2:43pm
Bought the game thinking the same thing about coop. After discovering with a friend what this multiplayer is like I feel extremely delusional about it. Unfortunately I'm not a developer but basic multiplayer seems to be the ABC since many years now.
Can't really be done nothing to play this great game properly with a friend?
