I'd tell you what armor to wish for, but I've never wished for stuff (I never find it necessary, and I don't play the large characters much) and therefore, I do not know how much money is needed for different types of armor.
There are multiple ways of getting large armor besides wishing. Some large creatures drop large pieces (mostly chest and helm). You can forge them at the blacksmith - resize armor, takes 3 of the same piece and he will create a large size for you. When you polymorph, armor is resized with you - so polymorph to normal size something, put on some armor, die/polymorph back to large size and the armor is resized. If you are on the good side of the leprechaun king, you can get large speed boots from him.
Good armor to wish for is going to probably include silver dragon scale for chest, speed boots, dex or str gloves, int helm, and a good cloak (e.g. cloak of displacement, cloak of protection, or maybe mana regen if you're going to cast spells).
If you want to do spell casting, you may want to consider wishing for glasses.
If you get a wish very early game, you might want to try wishing for some +3 spears. The easiest win I had was with the Vandal duel-wielding spears with double-speed (speed boots + haste spell), mighty blows, and weapon precision.
Only if you use a fountain.
Now, this gets me thinking.... how much would I need for an amulet of life saving from a fountain....
Again, I would say that depends on the player. Some value doing damage higher than taking damage. Some think "the best defense is a good offense" - kill before being killed. Some like getting better weapons before getting better armor.
It's my opinion that wishing for weapons does not mean you won't live.
And it's not you only get one (non-fountain) wish in the game. You could get many non-fountain wishes. You might also get none. So it's a priortization of what the player considers the most needed/useful (or even just desired) thing at the time. It wouldn't surprise me to hear of someone wishing for food because they were on the verge of starving to death.
Or maybe you're about to die and so you chance using an unidentified wand hoping for a teleport but you get a wand of wishing instead:

Spending a wish on non-legendary weapons feels like a waste since most of them are pretty common. The exceptions may be the more uncommon weapons - especially early game. Like the flaming 2-h sword, or one of the mage staves (leafy, white, black), or spears, or red hot pokers.
I did wish for +3 spears once - I got a wand of wishing super early (something like below 400 feet) that gave me a few wishes. I'm pretty sure I wished for silver dragon armor, speed boots, and the spears.
