SPOILER WARNING********************************************************************************
So, your pet is dead. You can use any number of healing spells on him if you have them. Heal, Cure sickness, and I think one or two more spells that would also generate healing. If there's a fountain that has healed you, dip a bottle of some other potion in the fountain. It should displace the original potion with a healing potion (I think).
To get a new pet, try the methods listed before. Also, there are random dogs as monsters. If you feed them, they will become your ally. Just use the pet interface like before and select the animal.
Furthermore, and stop reading if you don't want a non-pet getting or pet-reviving tip, you can acquire whistles. Play the whistel and see what happens. Tin whistles do nothing, but magic whistles will summon your pet to you which gets it out of the way of some of your attacks.
