I agree, the #1 priority should be AI fixes, but scurvy isn't that hard to deal with. Citrus isn't a consumable item, if you put a scurvy fighting food on your ship where your pirates eat, they'll be fine and you won't have to worry about scurvy ever again. The only problems that would keep me from using 30+ pirates all the time is the conflicting cleaning jobs bug and the lag at towns when 30+ pirates decide to get drunk :P
Throw in a scurvy toggle and I'm sold. Mostly becuase according to that list watermelons and fruits won't do crap and those are probably the most common food sources at start next to fishing.
But seriosuly a toggle would be nice. Options are always nice. Hell throw in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kraken and godzilla long as they're an option you can switch on or off!
That said, it also makes food being the thing that needs to be micromanaged the most and sucks the fun out the game that are about pirates. It's also the most Simy thing about the game
...but if you only feed Water Melon and Sour Krout to your pirates (sell your fish and all other food stuff), then you won't get sick at all!! Just remember that and you will be somewhat fine.
This is what seems to work until they update and fix it:
Don't got scurvy? Just buy watermelons and stock them in barrels. They don't seem to cause an issue. Anything else and you'll get scurvy in no time.
Have scurvy? Remove all the food on your boat and buy nothing but citrus and melons. It's going to eat up money, but bounty boards can pay off, so you may have to grind a bit. Stock only citrus on your ship until all your scurvy is removed. The AI currently doesn't pick foods intelligently, that's supposed to be in the next update with a big AI improvement. Once your scurvy is gone, stock nothing but watermelons.
Scurvy comes in stacks and is only cured by one rank per cure item. It can stack up to five times, but seems at the fifth stack, you're going to die really fast.
Hopefully with the update, a balanced diet will be key, but the AI will pick foods from your stock according to priority of needs.
As for the mechanic, it's a pirate game, and when you think of real life pirates, you probably think of scurvy, lice, and plenty of other disgusting diseases and infections. It gives incentive to stop at towns and interact with shops. On the other hand, it becomes another point of micromanaging that I'm not convinced is conducive to fun. Once you have the money to afford a balanced diet with plenty of food, it just becomes extra busy work. So, the fun of the mechanic really depends on whether or not you enjoy a little micromanagement, assuming the update fixes the issue.
so does that mean watermelon, fruit, and sourkraut will no longer cure scurvy?
and that cabbage, blueberries, and raspberries will be new items? I haven't found a way to get them so far.
I keep restarting and trying different things I haven't gotten far enough to notice it yet. Hopefully it gets patched and I'm oblivious to it.
