Cannons are pretty broken at this point. The issues are well documented, but basically you have no firing control (start/stop/aim) and it is very easy for two ships to sink one another if all they use is cannons.
If you are taking out a non-cannon hostile, make sure you don't grapple to them since friendly fire is possible. If your crew doesn't get blown up they will likely drown when the ship sinks.
I just got cannon balls for my ship and I can confirm all of this. First incounter was againts a no-cannon ship and my captain and a few crew members died when it sank. The second time was againsts another ship with canons and in about 2 seconds we both went down.
The only thing these canons are good for (as of right now) is when you raid islands. They will destroy everything on the island without even having to set your feet on the ground. And so far I havent seen any islands that have any counter for canons.
Also have a crew member or two that has the ship repair skill.
My best tactic against cannon-wielding vessels is to keep one crewman on your ship to draw cannon-fire. Manually move him around to dodge the cannon-balls (NOT below deck where a shot can sink you!), and make sure he can repair the ship. Your boarding crew should target the cannoneers on the enemy ship ONLY when they are not carrying a cannonball!!! If they're carrying a cannonball, they'll blow themselves and your crew up! Use manual targetting for this. (Pause and drag their action icon)
I've made several successful plunders on lvl4+ pirates doing this.
-Cannon explosions no longer trigger additional explosions
-Pirates will lose any cannonballs they might be holding after the cannon combat phase ends
-Also, now Thors Undies now make your pirates completely immune to cannonballs.
