Kotaku Review seems to sum up my feelings well.

They do a good job of pointing out the various things this new Onimusha has stripped away.

Not the biggest fan of Kotaku, but this Review is fairly on point, at least for a older fan of the Onimusha series such as me.

(To be frank, DMC5 is far more of a Onimusha game, than this Onimusha game is)

So, another reviewer that didn't know there were more than 2 Onimusha games before this one.

The guy goes so much into detail about how movement was deliberate. Tank controls were a compromise to begin with and were thrown away in Onimusha 3.

Not only that the remasters outright play better with the analog controls.

Be that as it may. I did play all the older Onimusha games, even have their guide books on my shelf still after all these years. And my feelings basically match what Kotaku is saying.

And for reference, I bought the game, had it pre ordered since it's announcement, was very excited to finally play it......only to stop after a while filled with a strong sense of melancholy.

As thihs......is not what I was waiting for, it is not what I was hoping for. And this Review did a decent job of pointing out the source of that feeling.
Kotaku, opinion dismissed.
Yes, of course they match because when you think Onimusha you are only considering the first two games and ignoring the rest. This one certainly feels more like the first two Onimusha games than Dawn of Dreams did.

Good example of the "Ad Hominem Fallacy" there~

.........I "did" mention I played all of them right? Or did you miss that part? When I was younger two of my favorite games were Onimusha and Armored Core.

You said you played them all That doesn't mean you consider them all when making your point. You are clearly comparing this to the first two and not the two that came after.
"For 95 percent of the game, you’ll be approaching mobs of enemies not as coherent groups whose composition meaningfully changes the encounter, but as individuals you rigidly defeat in a pre-determined fashion, one by one."

I read this and am wondering if the reviewer even played the right game. I guess you COULD do that if you just put on horse blinders. The vast majority of the mob battles I've encountered have things in the environment meant to make the fight trivial. Pick up a pillar/table/explosive and hit the enemy pack with it, killing most of them instantly, or shoot an explosive thing that kills an entire pack. Most of the encounters are set up in this way intentionally. Like BG3, you can hack your way through 1 at a time, but there's almost always a better way to do it.

Most of their other criticisms are whining about the open world and length of the game. Welcome to 2026, you can't sell a 4 hour game for $50 anymore.

I think that review sucked.
