Parrying/Flourish
Anyone have tips on using parry/flourish? Having trouble with the timing for this especially on the armored knights on insane/veryhard mode. Any help will be appreciated.

I was wondering about the block mechanics too. I'm playing through on hard mode, and at first it seemed fine, but when I got to the first boss suddenly they seemed terribly inconsistent. Sometimes I'd block incredibly late and still come out unscathed, but other times I'd block almost perfectly timed and the same attack would suddenly be unblockable. What exactly determines when an attack is unblockable?

Besides running/dodging, there are two types of defensive moves. I'll call them guard and parry. Guard is the block where you press a button(for me its the left button on my controller) and Misa will raise her sword to block.

There are two types of guard, regular and what im going to call "perfect guard". Guard is just press and hold, when you block youll hear the clang sound and your sword will flash. Perfect guard is when you press the guard button the moment you are attacked, thus "perfect", when you are successful, the white flash will be brighter and if you have the skill "counter", you can press your zangeki button to immediately perform a counter attack. Guard is the easier one to use. Most attacks can be blocked with perfect guard, but imo, your better off attacking/dodging in hard mode.

Parrying is tied to the skill "flourish" where you press the holy technique button right before you are attacked, in essence it is "perfect guard" but you use an attack button instead. It's more risky but the counter attack you perform is more powerful than any attack in the game(from my knowledge). This is what Im having problems with, I cant seem to get any timing down on any foe and when I do succeed I feel like it's random/lucky

Yeah I know about perfect vs regular. Still seemed very inconsistent to me in that boss fight. Best guess I can make is that maybe I was slightly to an angle of him (though still with my character facing him) so the game counted me as blocking in the wrong direction when he attacked? I have no idea.

I'm having the same problem with that darn Flourish skill. Everything would so be much easier if they would actually show you the timing at least once. :fmad:
Sometimes it feels like I have to face and move in the direction the attack comes from. But that might be just my imagination...

Me too, countering must be fixed, i think that attacks of boss especially final boss must be most slow a bit and guard more effective because slashes of final boss arent stoppable with guard.

just practice with instant blocking first, then you'll get a feel for flourish.

you don't need to be shown the timing: the timing is just much closer to when the attack is about to hit you.

@Yuki Thanks for the confidence in the system, will probally go down a difficulty to work on it

@the rest, I know it's frustrating when it seems like your doing everything right but everything isn't going fine. Don't put the blame on the game when it is probally you who are inconsistant. Also some attacks just are unblockable with guard.

The timing on flourish is so damn picky, I've only done it a handful of times. Doing a perfect guard is so much easier.
KungFuSOYASauce Mar 11, 2014 @ 12:33pm
It is very picky, after some practice I'm getting the hang of it, but still not able to do it consistently. Too early and I'll get combo'd, too late get combo'd. It's so rewarding when you pull it off. If you position yourself correctly, you can pretty much two hit an entire wave of enemies with flourish + zenshin. I wished I didn't plow through the game using attacks and learned counter/flourish instead.

Still would be nice to have a extra training section for that in the game, or something.

you can usually tell where your timing went wrong.

if you think you would have gotten it if you instant blocked instead, then you were too fast.
if you see your health drop about the same time as when you pressed, then you were too slow.

this isn't as stupid of a "time this perfectly" thing as dizzy's ice spike or potemkin buster frc.

the attack cues are reasonably readable in this game.

however it's possible beat she withouth flourish but it's necessary to have ALL upgrades to perform multiple combo after her swotd attacks by behind with hope that she not make ground sword attack when you are attacking.

@Yuki Yes! I figured it out, just need to practice it, I have it about 25% of the time.

Just a fyi, I'm not having trouble with the bosses, I'm having troble with the wave with three knights in insane mode, hopefully will be done by today.

i'm very jelly lol

i just want to get home and play. i'm almost done with very hard, and i only just learned about "insane" mode today.
KungFuSOYASauce Mar 11, 2014 @ 3:51pm
Well, I dont know if therse another mode after very hard, its just that some languages/steam achievement site lists one achivement as beat in insane mode, but the highest ive seen is very hard and theres no achivement for that, so i refer to it as vh/insane, sorry if I misled you
