All four have their ups and downs, I'm a Ice wiz and have no problems soloing above my lvl. Fire wiz have higher damage, but I can slow my enemies down so much that it really doesn't matter, they die before they can touch me. Priests are pretty awesome to solo though, they have a lot of healing power so high lvl stuff can't kill them. It's more a preference really. Do you want to be in the thick of things or do you want it to die before it can reach you?
You are always going to have some group fighting, above lvl 10 the elders are impossible to beat solo (at your own lvl).
I normally like to play ranged. So it seems Ice Wizard or Hunter.
I heard Warriors were the premier class but not sure if anything has changed.
And before this turn into a class war, all I said right now is purely my humble opinion :)
EDIT: and what Gwyn said about Elders, a warrior can take on Elders at their own level, atleast up to 30, I have yet to face the 40s alone on my warrior. Busy being Reborn on my hunter now :)
The warrior is perhaps the simplest to build an effective char, but running maps can be quite slow, the ranged classes are generally faster, but for the most part you'd better make sure you kill the mobs before they reach you or it's curtains. Holy priest is great fun (and can solo just as much as the others) but is very slow solo.
