Well, Zero wasn't the original anyway, but no. It's not an updated version of either the original or Zero.

It's very, very similar. Same course, some of the same cars and rivals, mostly the same mechanics, very similar driving model - but it's a new game in a different engine. About as close as you can get without being technically the same.
