Tokyo Xtreme Racer
Tokyo Xtreme Racer Feedback
Hello everyone and Genki,

I posted this discussion for my feedback because I finished the early access and wasn’t able to find where to post feedback, mainly feedback the developers would see.

First off I am a huge car guy, huge racing game fan and have been playing since I was a kid. My first ever racing game, I was 5 years old, it was Ridge Racer on PS1 with what I remember to be the Mad Katz steering wheel and pedals.

Growing up, I played the old NFS games, Midnight Club and accidentally stumbled across Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero. After watching the intro before loading into the game, I was hooked. Soon later once NFS Underground, the subsequent TXR games, ect, I played several racing titles before eventually working on a career, school and life itself. After getting back into gaming and racing games, recent “street racing” games just haven’t hit right like they used too.

I just wanted to briefly talk about myself so those (including Genki) who may read this feedback could have an idea of my experience.

When I heard TXR was coming back, and then there would be an early access and Genki wanted to hear feedback, I was pumped. I just finished the early access so here is my honest review:

Plot, Story, Main Focus of the game Feedback

Pros:
This is where TXR gets it right. Underground Japanese street racing on the Wangan. If this game translates to real life, you had $30k in your wallet and lived in Japan, bought a used JDM car to start racing on the Wangan, this is how you would do it. Hitting up meets at P.A, meeting others, battling them ect. Cruising the highways finding a racer and initiating a race with high beams.

Improvement:
I understand it’s early access, but P.A’s seem underwhelming with only 4 to 7 cars to select view. If maybe an entire P.A was full on certain nights and you could view/talk to more racers it would really make the experience more authentic. At certain times while you’re driving around and you approach a P.A, it would be cool to see cars rolling into the P.A exit ramp. The character design when you’re talking to someone could have more detail, maybe faces, some color in the clothing.

Progression:

Pros:
I didn’t find it difficult to earn money in the game as each race winnings, the earnings were decent; Compared to what I remember in previous titles. Car parts prices are reasonable, for example 100,000 Yen for Rays Te37 is about $650 which in real life, a set of those wheels are about $3k.

Improvements:
While the earnings and rewards are good, some of the prices seem off for example a level 3 intake upgrade is over 100k but it doesn’t really describe what the intake upgrade is. Some beginner players might find themselves stuck in progression with only able to get a bigger wallet later on. Some of the parts and cars are locked until you progress further to unlock them and this may frustrate some players.

Vehicles

Pros:
So far great selection of cars. Licenses is huge, authenticity, accuracy, representation, quality, are great.

Improvements:
Would like to see more variety, especially popular models currently available in Japan. For example, some of the Porsches used to race on the Wangan by Mid Night, recent GTRs, GR Supra, BMW’s ect that are driven raced and seen in the underground car culture in Japan. Some more variants or specs for certain models, 400R Nissan models, Nismo models, Skyline GTT, V-Spec, ect. All the cars for the most part sound the same. It would be great to hear the iconic 2JZ-GTE on a modified Supra or the RB26 when racing a Skyline GTR down a highway

Customization

Pros:
Nothing too crazy or absurd as far as body kits, ect. Licenses for actual parts, true to a specific car model. Decent tuning, nothing too crazy or complex. I did mention the cars sound the same however, the BOV and turbo flutters sound different depending on how much boost you are running. Higher boost had more of a flutter sound, lower boost was more of the “pshhh” sound.

Improvements;
With further updates, maybe more parts, wheels, and customization. A big one for me might have some others thinking the same, but exhausts should be individual modifications not just when you change a bumper. Some tuners will keep a car’s aero stock, maybe a front lip, spoiler, but a race exhaust will always be aftermarket; for example when you upgrade your exhaust in tuning, you could customize it there. Headlights, grills, headlight colors, taillights, are not customizable. You’re currently not able to add forced induction to NA vehicles, as far as I could tell from the early access. Motor swaps would be a great addition for example a 180SX with a 2JZ or a Silvia with an RB Swap.

Handing Driving:

I have not played the game with a controller therefore I cannot speak on that. I play the game with the Thrustmaster T598 paired with the TH8A shifter. After some tweaks, the handling is better than expected from an arcade type racer. There could be some improvements with “floatiness” but I was having fun. FFB felt pretty good. The cars don’t really oversteer as much as I think they should, of course TXR is not a drifting game, but there were some scenarios I encountered in which I probably should have oversteered but I didn’t. When my tires were completely worn out there were some instances of oversteer but it was nearly uncontrollable or unpredictable.

BGM/Sounds

There were some songs I remember from the previous game but the BGM does get repetitive. Some Japanese music, some popular American/Euro songs that are popular in Japan would be a great addition. Or, since the game is on PC, a way to upload our own playlists. I did mention earlier about the turbo flutter sounds and the cars all sound the same and I will touch on that again. Stock/factory vehicles should sound stock, slightly modified would sound different, and heavily modified vehicles would sound different. I will use an RB or 2JZ as an example, there will be no similar experience than that as soon as your race starts, your 2JZ/RB is roaring to redline, and when you left off the throttle once the race is over, you hear a loud “stutututu”.

Miscellaneous:

These are just some other things I could think of while playing the game. Some nice details are in certain camera angles before a race, you could see interior details of cars and they were different and model specific. Lighting, details, design of Japan is pretty good.

Other players mentioned traffic conditions/congestion would differ depending on what day of the week it was. Racing on a Sunday night the traffic could be very light but the later it got and closer to say 5 AM the traffic could worsen.

Speed traps would be nice of there was a camera flash and sound effect.

Console access in the future and online racing with servers. Creating your own teams, having team leaders or even just becoming a wanderer yourself. W/L ratios and online competition will be unmatched.

In conclusion, this was my feedback and review of the game. I have always said what other developers aren’t doing right is they aren’t staying true to the culture. Although they make an arcade type street racing game, the street racing isn’t really street racing. Whether it’s the US or Japan, no one is out there racing a 5 mile track on busy public roads jumping over billboards. They’re on highways doing 40 rolls, or racing from a dig.

TXR represents the Japanese way and the underground street racing culture therein and is doing a great job. I do believe with some minor changes, some additions, this TXR and future TXR titles will be the best street racing games out there.
