Tokyo Xtreme Racer
No 95-99 Eclipse?
Instead we got the two ugliest and least popular younger siblings? Hope they add more cars in the future. Would love to have the full lineup of Evos and the R35 GTR. Shame about Honda not being included. I know some people are upset about only Japanese cars but they have had American and European in the older games. I'm sure it's a "waiting and watching, and wondering why" approach; see how successful this reboot is.

And it was only in the international versions of the games (American and European). The Japanese version didn't even have them.

The commercial also says "Just Imported" right at the end, you know, from America.
I think the only version of the Eclipse ever sold in Japan was the 3rd gen Spyder, and even then, all of them were LHD.

Nobody is denying that it was imported and I even mentioned that in my original post.

You did, fair enough, I didn't read your original post, sorry about that.

Not a problem. I love the Gen 1/2 Eclipse and would love to see it in this game though. It's been a staple in racing games since the PS1.

More like a staple since the certain movie premiere.

Not sure which movie you are talking about, but I had an Eclipse in the original Gran Turismo for PS1 and was driving one in real life at the time.

Movie still sucks imo, but less than previous ones. Nevertheless, I hope you both enjoy your time together watching it.

Regardless of technicalities I'd love to see it in the game.

If they ever add American (and other) cars like many of the older games had, I'd even love to see the Eagle versions just for kicks.
4G Eclipse owner here. From what I understand and if my memory is still functioning well, the Mitsubishi Eclipse was designed and built by Americans in America through the Diamond joint cooperation that also included Dodge, which made the Eagle as the "full American" counterpart. They also made the Stealth using the GTO/3000GT as well, which they also used as pace car in some American tracks.

For the most part, the Eclipse has shared platforms and engines with the Galant, but wasn't really promoted much in Japan because they had plans for the slightly weaker but lighter (and apparently more fun to drive) FTO (which shared platform and engine with the Mirage if I remember correctly). I assume that having the Eclipse over there in full business would put competition to their own FTO because they'd share segments, and that segment (sporty affordable cars for young males) was already competitive with Mazda (Miata) and Toyota (Celica, MR series), among others, having very good cars there. On the other hand, imported Eclipses, while uncommon, were still available.

I had a buddy with an Eagle Talon. I had an Eclipse.

No Plymouth Laser though, please.

I believe that you are accurate. I also think that the Eclipse in Japan would not only compete with the FTO, but also the Lancer EVO, seeing as the FTO was not an AWD vehicle. Eclipse always seemed like a hybrid of these product lines to me. Though the '90s FTO would come after the Eclipse was created.
Check out this cool design story directly from Mitsubishi's car design site, written by its designers!
