I'd say just switch to manual and take a few laps around the C1 without racing anyone and you'll get a feel for it.
If that isn't enough you may need to step up to a different machine. The starting cars (particularly the 86 and the Swift turbo) will be pretty dominant in the C1 loop since they're very agile but they're not great straight line cars. I had good luck on my first run with the Subaru BRZ but until you complete the current content thats the only Subaru available but I've read here and other places that people are having a good experience with the Nissan and Mazda unlock trees.
I just don't understand what the gear ratio numbers mean. Like, under settings>transmission it says my gear ratio is 82mph. When I go to change it, I moved the final gear most of the way over to the left (1.597). To the right of each gear it says 55/75/99/116/137/132 mph, but that never seems to be the speed I get. I don't think this Roadster has ever hit anything over 121mph no matter what I change.
