Problem with Wireless Xbox controller with Steam Deck?
I tried playing this last night; my Steam Deck is plugged into my TV via a dock and I use a wireless Xbox controller - but I can't control the game.

I was able to hold the Xbox-symbol-button to emulate a mouse to get through the menus (though this was VERY tedious!) but then couldn't actually control the racing.

The options screen seemed to offer 3 "devices" as controllers - "Mouse and Keyboard", "Xbox 360 Gamepad" and "Xbox 360 Gamepad", but selecting these didn't make any difference.

Are wireless Xbox controllers supported via Steam Deck in the game?

Did you try rearranging the controls from the Quick Settings?

It could be that the Steam Deck Controller is detected as Player 1.

This happens with DualSense as well, basically after second startup the game confuses the gamepad configurations. You can fix this by going to the steam deck menu for the game and reordering the controllers so that the Steam Deck controller is in first place. Once I did that, the DualSense was recognized as player 1.

Thanks! I'll try this.

Do you know how to access the Quick Settings menu from a wireless controller? Obviously on the Deck itself it's a specific button.

I'm having the same issue, reordering controllers so that Steam Deck Controller comes first and the external controller (Steam Controller in my case) comes second does help temporarily. Hopefully they'll fix the issue.

On Steam Controller it's Steam+A, on Xbox controller it's probably Guide+A.

Hold the Xbox logo button and press A. (Or PS + X on DualSense)

So far no issues with a Xbox Elite 2 Controller connected via Bluetooth.

Connected to what? If it's your only controller, you won't have any issues, but OP and me are using Steam Deck, which has a controller built in, so the game sees two controllers and gets confused.

This was the answer I was looking for, tremendous help, thank you
If rearranging the controllers does not fix the issue you need to disable steam input for the controller under the gear icon >controller>disable steam input.
I am also having this issue, but I am apparently taking it to the next level.

I am using my SteamDeck docked to my TV and streaming from my PC in the next room, the game lets me pass through all the intro credits with the controller but then quits at the main menu. In the options there are two listings for "Xbox Controller" - one being the deck and the other my wireless controller. They both respond in the controller options but the game doesn't remember that I changed the selection to the game pad and keeps it on the one the deck is responding on.

No amount of changing order, turning on or off SteamInput or relaunching the game does any good. It's obvious the game recognizes the controller since I am able to get past the into scenes and with the controllers both showing up in options and showing activity on the sticks.

For extra testing, I installed the game locally to the SteamDeck and it works fine with the wireless controller without any fuss at all, even after re-launching the game.

I also set my controller into Bluetooth rather than using the USB Adapter and it had the exact same behavior.

Hopefully the devs will see this and can investigate.
