For the benefit of those who may also be curious, there is no Karma point attached to this quest (although it feels like there should be?) but the key is to not kill the Bogeyman. In both of my original play-throughs It didn't even occur to me to do anything other than beat the teeth out of him, being an evil clown and all.
If you explore the dialogue tree, you can first dissuade him from eating you by promising to bring him something better, using the Hoe of Doom to sever the tail of the petrified Groat Bulch, and then returning to the cave to give it to him as a snack. Then, you can make him curious about his past and he'll leave in search of his origin story. 800 episodes of One Piece worth of adventure later, he'll join you in the cube on your way to assault Ixal.
