Troubleshooting & FAQ: Check here first!
I'm having trouble running the game!

The first thing to do is to make sure you have the latest Java 7 installed. If you are on Windows, you may need to also remove all other versions of Java too (via the Control Panel). You can get Java from here:

http://www.java.com/getjava

Also, if a program like 7zip or WinRAR is opening up instead of 3089, your "Jar" association is not pointing to Java. Re-installing Java should help, but if it doesn't, try this:

http://johann.loefflmann.net/en/software/jarfix/index.html

Another option that may help: right click 3089 in your Steam library and select "Properties", move over to the "local files" tab and click on "Browse Local Files". This will take you straight to the file location (which is usually found in steam/steamapps/common area in your Steam folder). Right click the javahome file and select "Properties". You should be in the "General" tab already -- look at where it says "Opens with:" click on "Change" and then select "Java Platform" (mine comes up as "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" & under it "Oracle Corporation").

I don't know what I am doing!

Make sure to watch the "Quick Guide" here:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=205833486

The most important tip for lost players is the "Quest" key, which will give you a hint. It defaults to the "Q" key.

A quest target spawned somewhere I can't reach!

Unfortunately, the nature of random generation will cause this to happen rarely. There is a workaround built-in to 3089, though! Open the "Quest" dialog, which defaults to "Q", and select "Report Unreachable Target". The quest target should re-spawn somewhere else.

Why do I lose a random item part when dying?

Losing an item part on death is the primary penalty to death. If that penalty was removed, death would be without consequence and the motivation to not die would be significantly reduced. If you do not want to lose item parts, do your best to not die -- this may mean playing more cautiously or trying a different approach. Keep in mind you should be able to replace most parts quickly at a nearby station, and the "part" you lose could be a simple as a box of ammo.

The game is stuttering / lagging periodically!

Why are robots so accurate?

Robots are programmed to be accurate, of course! The good news is, robots are not as smart as you, so use that to your advantage. Cover is very important to survival & don't forget to use your special powers like Time Ripping!

3089 is designed around getting hit often without cover, so it is important to put skill points into Stamina & Defense, have armor and use special items. If it was relatively easy to dodge shots out in the open, the need for equipment, stealth & planning ahead would be compromised.

My weapon feels inaccurate!

Pay close attention to the accuracy statistic on weapons. Cheaper weapons often have worse accuracy. Also, weapons that shoot multiple shots have more spread. Movement, like running & jumping also temporarily reduces accuracy. To get the most out of your weapon, stay within an effective range of your target, keep an eye out for more accurate parts & try to use cover to shoot from (instead of running wildly in the open during a fight). Weapons with the "Homing" stat can also greatly improve short to mid-range accuracy.

I want a hotkey to use health & energy consumables!

Battles should be determined on your combat skill & equipment, not how quickly you can press the "heal" hotkey. Healing and recharging is something that should be done outside of battle. You can, if you are quick enough, duck behind cover, open & use consumables in your inventory -- but that is the risk you have to take.

How do I use teleporters?

Place one teleporter at a "home" location -- typically a place with storage & other goodies, like perhaps a friendly building with stations. When you are out in the field, you can pause the game & select "Engage Teleporter". After a short delay & minor cost, you will be teleported to the teleporter. You can then sell or store things & recharge your health (or do whatever you like). If you want to return to where you teleported from, interact with the teleporter & you will go back out in the field. Think of a teleporter as a two-way portal from where you are & your "home" location. Building another teleporter will replace your previous teleporter location & you can then safely reclaim old teleporters for building parts.

What is with meteor showers?

The idea of meteor showers came from emissions, seen in the STALKER games. Basically, it is an event that requires your immediate attention & gets even the most seasoned players running scared. Don't forget, you can pickup Meteor Charges if you are quick (and risky) during the showers!

Why 3089? What about 3079?

3079 was generally completed well over a year ago, even though it is relatively fresh on Steam. As much as that game was loved, many gamers (including myself) wanted to see something new & different based on the same concepts. A whole new engine was designed to deliver just that. 3089 isn't meant to replace 3079, they are both great (and rather different) games. You can read more about the differences here:

First off, fantastic game, loving every minute of it.

Now then, the troubleshooting.

I've got random freezing every hour or two of gameplay, sadly. I luckily usually lose very little each time, since the autosave works well, but it's a bit frustrating having to go back to the backup point every time.

I have not yet updated to the latest Java, but I'll do that now and report back in a few hours (or, if I end up falling asleep, tomorrow or something) to see if that fixes the issue.

So, I have uninstalled older versions and installed the latest version of java, but the game still crashes on startup. The game hasn't had this problem before... Thread: LWJGL Renderer Thread

Can you post a screenshot of that full error message?

I'm having the same problems, I get to the opening screen and it shuts down. No error messages are given for the shut down. I use Windows 8.1 with current java

Also, Intel HD chipsets often have trouble running this game (which is why I have dedicated hardware listed as a system requrirement). You can also try the instructions in the "Black Screen [Fixed]" pinned post..

Then I have no idea how to get your game to work. I tried everything I knew how to do to get it to work with an intell graphics card, but I guess I wont be playing your game.

So you do have an Intel integrated card? :( The best I can suggest is updating drivers, but they are unsupported due to consistent issues like these :(

At first I had the issue where it opened 7zip, Fixed that with your first suggestion, but I can't play the game; "java seems to be working..." is what the cmd.exe window is saying, but the game does not appear to have started up at all.

phr00t You have heard my problem already, but for others, i got multiplayer problems. When the game chrashes, it freezes and I have to use task manager to close it, giving me no error report. when it dosen't let me join it gives me that little message about bad address.

What triggers the freezes?

Does anything happen after is says "Java seems to be working..."? Can you try going into your 3089 directory within SteamApps/Common/3089 and running 3089.exe directly and see what happens?

When I try to run the game on fullscreen, I get this error message: Failed to create display. LWJGLException: Failed to set display mode (-2)

Windowed works OK so far.

Check the refresh rate value when going into fullscreen.. it should be something like 50hz or 60hz.. you might be able to change it to get fullscreen to work.

That did it! Thanks!

While I don't think I'll be able to help anyone else, uninstalling all of my Java and starting fresh (and then setting Nvidia to always use the 650m instead of the Intel card) got rid of the freezing.

If it helps, I've got an i7, a 2gb Geforce 650m, and 6gb of RAM. It uses the Optimus system that made Dark Souls compatability absolute HELL and apparently does so with other games, too.
