If you want a game with downgraded physics that plays like garbage, buy Snowrunner.
Seriously though, don't buy it.
What I know is that Spintires and Mudrunner run on the same game engine, though with a few different tweaks, but the core is still there.
Snowrunner was upgraded (lol) to a more recent game engine which means that it looks better, but that engine was absolutely not meant to handle this type of gameplay, and it shows.
I don't know how old your son is so no offense in what I'll say, but these games are still intended as "simulators". They're slow-paced and can get tricky at times. This isn't Need For Speed but with trucks.
Either way I genuinely believe that Mudrunner is a better purchase choice because the core gameplay is solid, and that matters more than fancy graphics to me.
This is up to one's personal preference however.
If you need any argument, you can have him watching this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oal-etDDGk
Worst case scenario, there's always the refund feature if you've bought the game but didn't play more than 2 hours of it.
Summer Sales should be soon enough, so you can find the games for cheap.
Son is 11 yo. I think he mostly likes games like BeamNG Drive or Euro Truck Simulator. He has spent some 17 hours in Spintires so far, but he seems to be comming back to this game once per a while. Honestly, I dont really understand what is his "golden nugget" in these games, so I'm not sure whether he is more into graphics or mechanics, but I will explain this all to him. And he has seen some vids... well... he seems to spend big chunk of his life on youtube, so no wonder ;-P. Anyway, I will watch this vid from your link, thanks! For me, personally, graphics is a third important thing in a game... but I'm a dinosaur, so hard to compare myself to new generations ;-)
And yes, Im waiting for summer sale ;-P.
I'm almost tempted to take the thing backwards and say that for his age, it matters more than the accuracy of the physics simulation.
It's a much bigger playground and they quite recently added a Sandbox mode so you're not restricted by XP gains and money anymore.
The "normal" mode of Snowrunner is a piece of ****** making you start with barely any upgrades and highway tires. It's a serious exercise in frustration and one of the (many) reasons I have to dislike the game.
The extra flexibility for starting a save was much needed.
If this was an adult to adult conversion and you asked me which one of the two was the best offroad simulator, I would answer Mudrunner without an hesitation. It does less, but it does it better.
Snowrunner is also widely popular, to the point that Spintires and Mudrunner are very often overlooked. At least Mudrunner is, since Spintires is very well hidden by now.
If you had done the same thread on Snowrunner, asking "Should I buy this game ?", everyone would have enthousiastically answered you yes.
The game has a lot more trucks, more addons, bigger maps, more varied cargo and it's also much more colorful. (Mudrunner itself is a lot darker than Spintires in color tones)
It's just that the people who stuck to Spintires and Mudrunner have a reason to, otherwise we'd all be happily playing Snowrunner as well. We're just a small minority on the side.
Yet given the context I would still consider Snowrunner a valid option.
So that's my honest answer to you.
It's the third time I try to type a conclusion. Snowrunner is still going strong and if your son has watched a lot of Snowrunner content, he probably set his mind already.
Mudrunner exists as an alternative, and a more "serious" game, but maybe that's not the important point right now.
So I guess the two of you will have to make a choice, now that you have been informed of the options.
There's no right or wrong answer here.
Thanks for very deep answer - You really made point in explaining several "why's", I appreciate it. And yes, this is very honest answer. I wish I could get similar answers in several cases in past... I've noticed that typically forums are filled with one sort of people: super-followers or super-haters. And in many cases one of these groups seems to hold power. And when they do they dont allow any other opinions. If you visit Factorio, Rimworld or likewise games forums only hype is legal. If you visit Wolcen's forum you are not allowed to say that you actually like the game - you have to curse it. So it is always good to find a person capable of seeing both sides of the stick. Because, honestly, there are no perfect games. And there are very few really terrible games. Most games are somewhere between 4/10 and 8/10.
