MonoGame Engine Beta (With Linux support) [10/14/16]
Note: This version is separate from the normal and beta versions of the game, and does not have all the latest content yet. Use this version if you want to help us test the new engine and the linux version, but use the normal version if you want to have access to the latest updates while we finish up this engine beta.

Hey everyone, we need your help testing some changes we've made to the underlying engine of Signs of Life. We are working on changing the underlying engine of the game, and as a result we are going to need you folks to help put it through its paces. On a technical level, we're switching the engine from XNA to MonoGame. This change should allow us to remove quite a few limitations on the game, but you won't really notice much in the way of changes right away. This beta does not have any new content compared to the default version of the game currently on Steam, but we need as many people as possible to start using it anyway so that we can make sure things are stable. We're still hard at work on the new content for the next content update, but we wanted to put this beta up now so we could start working through the engine related issues ASAP.

Let us know in this thread what issues you run into, and please specify if you're using the Linux version

How to enable the MonoGame Beta
Right click on Signs of Life in steam, click properties, then click on the "BETAS" tab, and select "monogamebeta" from the dropdown box. You may want to back up your save folder (my documents/my games/signs of life) but as far as I am aware the MonoGame beta should not break saves if you choose to go back to the regular version of the game. If your saves do break, let us know and we'll look into it.

Linux Setup
You will need to manually install Mono and SQLite3, we're still looking into how to get this installed automatically.

Changes you might actually notice
  • Linux support
  • The max resolution is no longer 2048x2048. I've tested it up to 4k (I don't actually have a 4k monitor but it seemed to work using Nvidia's Dynamic Super Resolution).
  • Memory related crashes should no longer happen (was rare, but happened occasionally)

Known Issues
  • Lighting issues at very high resolutions (lighting doesn't update properly towards the edges of the screen yet)

This update has a bunch of fixes, but not the new content (creatures, boss, etc) that we're also working on, that update will come not too long after we finish the engine change.

0.8 Beta - 1/21/2017
-Fix for graphical issues for players in some regions
-Several graphical fixes for players running the game at very high resolutions
-Several crash fixes
-Jump height has been increased slightly
-Some changes to the behavior of the grapple laser
-Added emerald gems and upgrade recipes
-Emeralds can be inserted into the grapple laser slot on the MEG tool
-Several misc fixes

Maybe, it depends on how things go and if we run into more problems. We'll probably have an update with the engine change before jan 30, but the content update probably won't be done by then.

Does it give you any errors? What operating system are you on?
No, it's just crashes when i try to open. I'm on WIN 10

Version 0.8.1
-Significantly reduced save time
-Fixed crash reporter tool
-Fixed some other crash issues

Try the latest version and see if it helps. Llet me know what happens when you try to launch the game, I'm not sure if this update will fix it for you but it should have better logging to figure out what is wrong at least.

I can't launch the game anymore, i could with the first version of monobeta branch with the Play button.
