Were you just dropping dead out of nowhere or were you getting attacked by something? I don't think I've ever experienced just dropping dead after a world generation, so I'm very interested in what might have been going on here. I've tried to keep things mostly passive around the area you land, but obviously something isn't working the way I'd intended.
Well shoot, I've tried to make it so that even really old worlds would still load. If you want to send those worlds to me (they should be in My Documents/My Games/Signs of Life/SavesPlanets) at playsignsoflife@gmail.com I'll figure out why they're crashing and patch it up.
Hmm yeah, sounds like you got unlucky with the world generator that time. I definitely need to ensure that you land in somewhere "clean".
Yeah, we got rid of the old pod when we changed the intro. We'll probably add it back in as a craftable thing down the line that you can use as a vehicle.
I'm curious what happened here, because they should be mostly passive. The only thing I can think is that they're aggressive towards the little yellow ants and if they kill an ant the ant's blood can spray the player which then gets the flyers aggressive towards the player. Does that sound like it might be what happened?
You shouldn't need to rely on the keyboard, you can click on the slot with the weapon/tool in it and scroll the slot with the mouse wheel. You can also just open your inventory and right click on the tool/weapon you want to use.
Huh, ok. Those aren't supposed to spawn very close to where the pod lands, but it sounds like they are finding a way over there. I'll look into this.
lol, I do need to do something about that XD. I think I'll just make it so once you open the door the head is no longer a key item or something.
Yeah, we need a better sorting algorithm that groups like things together.
Hmm, it should attack you with a long pokey spear, were you using ranged attacks?
Hmm, I can see how that would be an issue, I'll do something about that.
I'm going to be adding a shortcut for the AGIS investigate thing very soon, a few other folks have brought that up recently as well.
Which options in particular did you have trouble with? I'm not aware of any that require a restart
You're talking about on the surface, yeah? I definitely need to do a better job about closing up those holes.
Honestly it was just a joke originally, but it is kinda out of place. We mostly wanted the player to start with nothing so they could build up to the guns and stuff, thus the single bullet.
The robot isn't really very useful for defense in it's current state, but that gives me the idea of possibly making it so you could harvest components from the robot to either make a defense structure or a weapon. Might be a fun choice for the player about how to use the limited resources you'd get from killing one.
I think the music should always be playing, but I'll look into it.
The GPS device functions sorta like this, with a bigger (than the minimap) screen that you can pan/zoom. It would probably be a good idea to add a full screen option though.
There are flashlights in the game but you have to find/craft one. Maybe I'll stick one in the escape pod's inventory.
Huh, not sure, I'll look into it though.
Don't be sorry! Seriously, this kind of feedback is incredibly useful. The experience of a new player (or a returning player from awhile back) is super helpful. We're putting together a tutorial/intro now, and this kind of feedback is super useful for figuring out things that we need to make sure get explained before the player is dropped onto the planet to fend for themselves.
Well, apparently, it was a mentioned monster that was killing me after whole starting dropdown sequence. You know, a small brown humanoid (can lookup name but i'm sure you are aware of what it is). It wasn't just dropping dead out of the sky. I was repeatedly killed by same onground enemy that somehow happened to be on exact place where respawn chamber is on the pod. And as you say they shouldn't spawn near pod, something went wrong at some point. Sadly savefile was deleted as it would at least prove what happened. From what it looked like, I don't even remember said monster perform attack animation and it looked more like contact damage. Before seeing it as a monster I believed it was just a spike on the ground or something.
Of course. will send those files for sure. I'm not surprised old stuff isn't working. Keeping compatibility to old versions while still having expanded game is a challenge sometimes. My first guess would be missing asset or story element that makes game confused.
Not saying getting generated in purple clay land (can't remember how that tile is called, sorry) is any bad, but I didn't like idea of very distorted starting area with what looks like monster corruption around as it might mean increased danger on starting area. Just my observation.
As vehicle? That's interesting idea that I don't know how to feel about :D As for craftable, After getting broken parts I even assumed there was a way to fix it, but was too lazy and pre-occupied by other things to figure it out. I guess optional objective to fix the pod would be nice at some point.
Not really, but it might have happened, that for sure. I know once I got killed by it with no ants nearby at all, but it was weird, I was low on HP, no armor and in general running naked for my life with constant fear on stepping on spiked snail anyway. (was airborne so dead not by snail for sure). Usually I ignore yellow ants and their blood, so can't really say too much about why I got slaughtered there.
But as sidenote- as you mentioned there are inter-racial interactions between NPCs, it might be interesting information to add to codex. Afterall, it gives player more information about the surroundings.
Yes, i'm aware, but what I wanted to say is that it either requires to move a mouse to top right side of screen (which includes sometimes annoying screen scrolling) or using keyboard shortcuts to select what kind of "tool" is wanted (mining, mellee, ranged, etc) before selecting actual desired "tool". Gets really frantic when you have scissors, saw, hammer, axe, commander head, fist, screwdriver, sword and some sort of dagger in mellee list and all you actually need is your trusty iron sword and axe 99% of the time.
Another way to handle head situation- put it into "misc tools" section next to scanner, firestarter, bags of seeds and other rarely used things. (I guess same approach could work on other non-weapon tools like scissors and screwdriver). Why would a head have attack rating anyway if player usually gets AFTER visiting mining station where he gets a free pickaxe or something that he can use as panic weapon anyway. (I get the joke of beating someone with a human head, but can't damage rating be left in game while making head as a "tool" that stays next to firestarter?)
Well, alphabetical order of TYPE of item (block, armorpiece, clothing, ore, storage units, furniture, etc.) would work, but I know how much work it would take to actually assign a type to each existing item in game.
No, was using mellee. Thing is, I had already near complete iron armor set from visiting bases (only leggings were copper/bronze, not sure which is easier to make, but whatever it is, it was that :D) . Not sure about shield, but i had either brown one like leggings or iron one already. It was attacking using tongue or something, that sure, but it was not dealing any damage, hence the "cheesing".
Guess making whole room 2 blocks wider (1 block each side) would fix issue, but then, new world would be required to take effect. (not really bad thing with ongoing development)
Might be just me, but edge scrolling and minimap style (hologram/UI) doesn't seem to take effect when changed. And I eliminate any file-write issues because options like v-sync and resolution work good. But minimap and edge scrolling seem to ignore my choise. (Can be caused by older config file maybe?)
Yes, surface. It's not a big issue, but seeing a tree float 6 blocks above bottom of 10 block deep hole on just 4 blocks of dirt is weird. Not saying generation of surface is bad, it's good and even better than some other 2D sandbox action games I've played.
As for slabs, I don't think there is need to cover every hole between stations up. As memo stated, some places get distorted after a while and blocks missing, so imperfections even add to the mystery.
But, doesn't giving a gun with bullet instantly unlock recipes for ammo and weapon itself? Dont get me wrong, I get the joke of putting player in unknown land with nothing of his own except clothing and a single bullet, but it just feels weird when you think about it in game mechanic perspective.
Sounds interesting. Especially if resources from it would be very hard or even impossible to craft by player, leaving player to make a choice what to do with gathered resources.
I'm not saying it stops, but I felt that either some of soundtrack was very silent, had silent parts or was blending with suroundings so much that it didn't look like soundtrack at all as at some times I was wondering if music stopped or what.
To add to same topic- After few hours of constant gametime and a bit of afk (with alt-tab) music glitched out, making itself loop every 2s or so. Was weird, but game restart fixed that issue. Can't really say much about it but it wasn't hurting game experience anyway.
Now as mentioned, I kind of remember using GPS as map when I was playing long ago. Fullscreen option might be interesting, or just some sort of map window (without player location if GPS tracker not present in inventory). But I feel that it also breaks the mystery of where exactly things like artifact room is.
Pretty sure it's good enough that player starts with whole set of tools from a little device as it is. One of them includes light. If flashlight would be provided to early player, maybe its better to put one behind a mech guardian in base. Just like screwdriver. Or in blocked off room of same base. Starting player needs to struggle with low levels of light for a while :)
Sorry for wall of text only :) I'm aware that development needs constructive comments and even criticism to go successfully and it's one of reasons I've even made this post to begin with.
About tutorial/intro section- be sure not to dumb it down to basics. Most players already know that SPACE means jump and arrows/wasd means movement. Making a good tutorial means that player doesn't have to feel like a child who doesn't know what keyboard is for. Skip the basics, tell how tool selection works, how ranged weapons work, how tools with rightclick work and let the player die for his mistakes :D
Otherwise it is those squirrel guys, forget the name, but they kick you and after a while may often burrow away. If you hit them one more time or so when burrowing, you can kill and loot them (and they have more advanced brethren).
The GPS device does provide a full screen map somehow, but this is one of the artficial remnants (in my view) that is self-defeating in the game. You have an M key, you have a traditional meaning for it, it is best to have it have a three stage toggle (none, mini-map, full screen map). Requiring the GPS to have the Full Map doesn't make sense (especially since you can drop it later). It is much more important to have the devices fill in the map with what they are supposed to do, that retains the meaning for the GPS and also for the other emitter.
My new campaign started yesterday, does not have an issue with Squirrels near the landing site.
The blue Lapis Wings (or whatever they are called) and not aggressive in my game, but if they are hurt by you in any way, they will become so. HOWEVER, there is something definitely fighting them off my screen at times, as I often find their dead bodies and get to look their wings. I even saw several fall from the sky, so they are battling something. Didn't know about the Ant, hmm interesting.
The long pokey spear plant, who is stationary, will attack with a long red spear from the stalk if provoked and he has a long reach. But I found the new Leather Whip nice for dealing with him and it does a cool damaging attack on it also, worth trying out if you like. I wonder if later we find a mobile version of this plant later on, that would be scary. Worth checking the loot from that plant if you get so lucky.
One of the things many players probably never try or know, is that the game is paused while you don't choose BAD NEWS or GOOD NEWS indefinitely. This allows one to explore the interface, mousing over and using it.
For organizing the inventory, would be nice if we could select what groups to order first, second, etc, and then have items with such tags (such as in the crafting device has -- armor, weapons, tools, materials, bags, so on) ordered as such. If not, I'd say ready access items at top (like weapons, armor) and other things later.
Single bullet in the 9mm, for killing oneself off -- but then you fail -- is pretty funny. But the advantage of it is that you can then right click on the ammo and weapon (I think, not sure) and get more info and perhaps the recipe to it.
The Flare Gun has 8 rounds to it in my game. Of course, we really just create new stuff, melee and bow, and work from there, as not enough ammo to do much with that either.
I was surprised that the Purple Wrist Laser (forget the name of it) on Holding Down Left Click actually filled in an entry for lifeforms into the Codex. I don't think that is described in the early Aegis comments, but that's really cool. Laser's name did not suggest this, either.
Did not get to read carefully the whole post, just thought I'd mention these, see if they interest you.
Yup, it was that small guy. But he didn't look like kicking, as mentioned, looked like contact damage.
Yes, noticed that a lot too. Even got to make a glider as one of first items because of just finding their wings. I wonder what kills them as I have seen it once when 2 blue Gliders attacked 1 for no good reason? (maybe were mad at him for swearing in Glider language? the hell i know :D)
Pokey spear plant also gets you a nice sword if we talk about same plant here and I loved to see it pretty soon from start in my game on the surface. But pokey attacks mentioned before were from turtle mounted smaller guy kind of enemy. Some sort of areal boss I'd say.
One thing I find interesting is that game doesn't provide too much help to player. Drop it into planet, give him useless clothing, laser thingy on the hand and off you go to die until you learn something. UI itself is easy to read (minimap should be enabled by default tho) and doesn't require too much exploring to get used where is what.
Yeah, too early unlocked crafting recipe for bullets and weapon, tho, is a bit bad no matter the joke.
Never really found flare gun to be very useful in such style games. At best it's very situational for me.
Scanner? I think it's called Scanner :D I think it's mentioned somewhere as one of first things I did was scan every living ♥♥♥♥ out of nearby creatures. Kind of annoyed it works through walls and obstacles tho. It shouldn't.
You may have also been killed by either a ghost or dirt golem (thing that jumps out of the ground) :)
I still havn't really figured out what the codex might be usefull ... also fun to try out the new updates!
While looking at folder for my "farm" map to send to dev, I notice that making a character and deleting it doesn't delete associated map files. Found myself that the map with instadeath AND crappy world generation are still in place. Without a thought of backup files I launch up my game, go to sandbox and load a world that I think might be the death trap. Yes, it is. What I can tell is that small brown humanoid creature (we know by now what it is) kicks me in the balls and that is enough to kill me. Also, there is aggressive infected pumpkin snake few steps away that most likelly helps with killing me on spot. Oh joy. and that was with my regular geared up char. In fear of losing my stuff to dumb experiment I load up my "usual" map, get my bronze gear from box, rest up to full HP and load back up death map again, kill the sucker, get my stuff back, realise I ruined a very good screenshot/video opportunity that would prove that mob placement on generation is broken somewhere and back to my world. (gonna try to recover previous version of file, but I doubt on that. Would be nice if it works out).
Also, load up another map I discarded instantly when making new char and it still looks ugly enough not to have as starting position :D https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1510204149 Also, notice there is a flying fruit, which leads me to believe tree was spawned there on generation but later ground (and tree with it) got replaced by this weird clay thing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1510205776
Will keep on playing today to get more new content. This was just update while Im sitting in bed and sipping my morning energy drink, trying to wake myself up :D
-Every time you load different world, spawn point resets on all maps to pod. Um, ok? I guess?
-Why, WHY shift+click on item doesn't work for fast transfer to opened container? putting things manually is a chore sometimes.
-No idea where from or how, but jumping in and out of worlds previously I got myself Influx Salve and Biometric scanner instantly equiped n my character where trajectory computer was. huh?
---more to come as edit to this---
-GPS Tracker map display is fun and all, but... it doesn't loop, which means it shows just a bit of area left and right and then a straight simple line. If world is round for player, why it shows different in UI? (I understand how map works, but if minimap and engine itself can loop the world data, why can't GPS Tracker? Feel like adding this map to some button to call on demand would be nice, even as hologram. And having no GPS Tracker on hand would mean you can't see your exact location on it.
---more to come as edit to this---
-Realised my confusion with minimap setting. Edge Peek works now, no idea why it didn't before. But minimap setting... Apparently, having minimap on screen as UI, then going to settings, changing to projection, applying and going to game does nothing because you have to press M again to actually get your projection. (which makes you have 2 minimaps now. yay?) What about making projection show not minimap, but full map instead that can be toggled by M and making minimap to always show unless disabled? (enabling back with UI button)
---more to come as edit to this---
So, for actual game progression now...
-Was messing with previous things, realised it's enough, let's go to business.
-3 Steps outside the base (Pioneer base that is. it's my new home now.) another portal dropped near my face, scaring me of my energy drink can. Mind you, one of those are still on top of building, just next to that antenna thing I just fixed a day ago. Pretty much locked in my base now except for broken window to jump out :I Gonna clean the floor before it becomes sticky and yucky.
-Enabled xbox DVR mid-game so I don't miss out on weird stuff for proof if it happens again. Game fps dropped to sub-20. Consider my laptop to be powerfull enough for 3 year old 2D action sandbox with xbox DVR to work smooth. (In comparison, works fine in other games. Few days ago was using DVR while playing Wreckfest and it ran stable 60fps on max settings. (not bragging, but my laptop can handle stuff, trust me on that one)
-Restarting game, hope it works with DVR.
-Disabling DVR...
-Gonna go check that new thing outside the door.
-Got killed next to "my" base door. I knew that was going to end up bad...
-Got my stuff back. Notice bio scanner and vial are gone. huh?
-Decided will go underground, it's more safe down there and also gives me reason to adventure as I might find more GPS signals to scavenge.
-Oooh, some sort of ancient thingy on the ceiling, looks cool and have similar runes on it that give me powers.
-OUCH. it's evil :( and it makes me burn :(
-Been poking at it for a while. Bolt power from alien tablet doesnt do anything to it, sword does nothing, it just keeps spitting out fire and break blocks. moving on.
-Oh look, another one. Hope they mean there is new tablets nearby.
-This one shoots different. It's not fire. I'm intrigued. Maybe those runes on it mean something? Will have to investigate later.
-OMG WHAT IS THAT 4 LEGGED THING
-Oh, it died fast. It was creepy alien tho.
-Another one of those shooting things. This one shoots same things I do. Maybe I can do something with it...
-Nope, but it seems it shoots homing projectiles meanwhile mine seem simple. Not fair. Going to pick up my stuff.
-That alien in front of base is getting annoying...
-Got stuff back. hate those things already...
Going for some shopping. Need more stuff to drink, maybe a snack. Will continue on new comment.
-Ooooh, another alien "shrine" (?).
-Notice "recharge station" have different layout of 2 lights above it. Looks like clock or some sort of direction compass? Will have to investigate as no info is provided.
-New powers baby! No idea what it does tho, but looks like ice projectile. Will have to test it later. Targeting is kind of weird, doesn't seem to allign to cursor.
-hate those sentry things by now... Makes very hard to get stuff back without digging a hole next to a hole it makes and trying to getmy crap through small holes in wall.
-Oh neat, purple ore deposit. It's nice, wish I could bring it home. Or even break it...
-OMG IT'S ALIVE
-Why everything tries to kill me? plants try to kill me, ore tries to kill me...
-Constant rightclick attack with iron pickaxe seems to get them killed very fast (faster than iron sword actually), I think I found myself infinite purple ore farm.
-I thought tar-like black material was taking ages to mine through... my god how marble fields are annoying me already...
-5 years of marble mining I finally closing in to another GPS signal. Looks like maze or platforming puzzle from outside. Must be fun, but i'm afraid for life at this point.
-Apparently it's zig-zaging room full of easy to cheese robots. those platforms are conveniently placed to keep player out of danger while allowing to attack with mellee because of robot trying to close in to player despite being ranged.
-Punchers are terifying :I Can't seem to find weak spot meanwhile they plow through blocks. i'm scared
-Reached unminable brown ground. Don't want to believe it being bedrock, but it's uneven and I can't seem to find a way around it. hmm...
-Realised that carying bed with me means full heal anywhere as long as enemies are away. yay.
-Back home, made myself steel shoes, helmet, shield and some mining armor near full set. lets get rid of aliens, i guess
-Killed the alien. Finally day of revenge has came. Wonder... Can I sneek into portals they make? Or use Dynamo or parts in any way? Let's find out...
-Sneaked in the portal. No idea what that ship is, portal has closed, so no idea how to go back home apart from using tablet to teleport out (if it works)
-No matter upgraded armor, get slain by red aliens near instant. And no idea what that big portal does, but will try to jump inside next time im near, maybe will work.
-I'm lost. seen a room in that weird ship with some gems, made myself alien gun... No idea where else to go...
Also, what is this weird behavior of yellow stuff above stairs. Doesn't seem to go away.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1510454568
-Apparently my new weapon acts like alien turrets on ceiling, including door opening mechanics. neat. but not too helpful. Love using it for enemy.
-Found some square things in ship, no idea what they do, but seem unfinished.
-Alien pots still keep dropping from the sky :/ why
-After further inspection realise one of items I found is a teleporter. Neat.
-Realised how big weird "portal" works
-Opened that weird door, no idea what blue thing wants from me...
-Chest in end of halfway doesn't work
-Turned off power. Guess that fixes alien problem.
-What now...
Also... Don't think this supposed to happen
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1510491069
-Realised how minimap scrolling works. Explains big map lines to the sides.
You can use the middle mouse button to move stuff to the last container you clicked on (which would have a blue border), but I'm going to be adding the ability to use shift-click very soon too.
Now this is very strange, I'm not sure why that would happen. I'll look into it though.
Yeah, I've been meaning to fix the looping issue for awhile, and I kinda agree about having the map available all the time instead of just on the GPS device. I'll give it some thought.
Hrm, I've never experienced this but it sounds like you're having quite a few issues with the equipped devices. I'll see what I can figure out.
These are really just hazards right now, but I want to do more with them.
You can break the spawner by destroying the crystals that come out when the aliens spawn, but another one will just drop later. I think we need to make a way for you to prevent them from dropping in an area, maybe something that shoots them down? Hrm.
XD The tongue that they shoot out is a weak spot.
Looks like you killed something there or something sprayed some goo on the stairs. I'll make it so you can clean the tiles off with the wrist laser, and I need to fix the graphics so it doesn't look like it's just hovering over the stairs.
Yeah, my main guess is that it got bugged and showed wrong item and when I died weird items disappear which leads me to think that they got "reloaded" and fixed itself. They were just showing in there. Couldn't really say if Bio Scanner was even working while I had it because I didn't notice any difference or any HP indicators.
Weird, when I was trying to get into portals that appear, I kept spamming rightclick when portal starts to move, which led to a lot sword hits to portal and around until I get inside, but that never seem to even to anything as it probably never hit a destructible part. But ability (or consumable like Salvage Kit) to destroy them would be neat.
Yeah, IIRC it was yellow ant or part of yellow ant from inventory that got hit when I got slain by alien and it got destroyed by a hit from same alien? (assuming items *on ground can be manipulated that way). But what's interesting is that usually such goo goes away after time. This one looks more permament. Ofc, I could try to destroy staircase and put it back, but it's effort I don't want to do :D Mostly was about incorrect goo "physics" of applying to square tile on sloped stairs.
