I'd really suggest to make it so - pressing Control+X once selects the squad but doesn't not jump to it - pressing Control+X twice quickly selects the squad AND jumps to it This is how it works in most RTS games and it's much more convenient to use groups this way. Regarding mission design - at least in first 3 missions there's little reason to do anything but create a big army, scout where enemy base is and go straight to it.
