Black screen (not responding) when starting Multiplayer
Hey guys, I just got this and when I start the multiplayer, the splash shows but then it's black and unresponsive. I have to end the task via task manager - ESC and Alt F4 does not work.

I've tried:
- Changing audio settings (48000Hz to 44100Hz and enabled Stereo Mix)
- Somethig plugged into the mic port
- ran it from the folder without steam
- changed compatibility to XP (can't find steam error)
- copied a steam.dll to the COD2 folder
- deleted the clientregistry.blob
- restarted steam
- rebooted my PC
- ran in safe mode as well

Is there ANYTHING I haven't tried?
$30 is a lot of money for a program that does not work :(

Running Windows 8

Thanks,
Dumac

I have recently installed Windows 8 on my computer and I am having the same problem. I have also tried verifying the integrity of game cache (right click Cod2 in Library, click properties, click Local Files, click verify integrity of game cache), and it still comes up as a black screen when run as multiplayer.. I would really like to get back in contact with my clan [OutLaws]..
I'm having the same problem as well on my Windows 8. Single player loads like normal but not MP
Bump! I know this thread is older, but has anyone figured out this problem? I am having the exact same issue and have tried many of the solutions that you all have tried. Let me know if you were ever able to get it working. I have to actually restart my computer because after I get rid of the black screen the resolution of my monitor is all messed up. I check the config file but it is set at my screen's normal resolution.

I have the same problem. The single-player runs fine, but the multi-player shows a black screen. There must be a delay of some kind because if I wait for several minutes (like 10 or 15) then the game shows up. Running Windows 8.1 64 bit.

Anyone has got a solution?

I have found a solution: locate your CoD2MP_s.exe, right click, Properties, Compatibility, and set "Run this program in compatibility mode for" to "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)". To make the cursor work you need to press ALT+TAB a couple of times.
If you're sound drivers are Realtek HD, plug in a mic. Solved here.

Try waiting 30 - 60 seconds. When I start SP the game menu shows up immediately but when I start MP, I have a black screen up to a minute and then the game menu shows up.
I had to set the launch command +set com_introplayed 1 in order to bypass the black screen issue.
Can you explain how to do that please?

Sure, on the steam games list right click on Call of Duty 2 > Properties > under the first tab (general I believe) is a section called launch options add that command in text entry box. This is the same thing as placing a shortcut to the exe on the desktop and adding the command to the end of the file path (steam does not like this though).
Same black screen and single player works fine. There is something wrong with the config_mp.cfg. I solved switching my cfg with this:

http://www.gamingcfg.com/cfg/stewzoR

Everything else didn't work for me...

Where is the cfg file located?

I fixed this by setting compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3), then copied Steam.dll from the steam install directory to the Call Of Duty 2 directory. See this topic: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=160163309

This worked for me! Thanks Krige! I really appreciate it and I sent you a friend request so maybe we can play together sometime. Anyway, this fix works for the multiplayer crash and remember like he said to hit alt + tab to get your mouse cursor working after you put your name in your profile.
