You can play multiplayer on Windows 8.1.

Heres what you have to do.

1. Go to your C:\Program Files\Steam\ and find the files "steam.dll" and "steam2.dll" and copy those two files.
2. Go to your C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Call of Duty 2\ and paste the two files there.
3. Now that your in the Call of Duty 2 directory, right click your Cod2MP_s.exe and go to compatability tab.
4. Change the compatability to Windows Vista SP 2 and check the box at the bottom that says " run as administrator".
5. Restart Steam and Try to play Cod2 Multiplayer. Also give me feedback of exactly what goes on when you try to play Multiplayer.

Thanks but still does not work. I don't even get a failure msg. Cod2 tries to open then I get a partial black screen and the rest of my desktop that I can see seems to have had the resolution changed. :(

Hey all. I just reinstalled Call of duty 2 to my new pc through the steam app. When i started the game in either mode (i wanted MP mode though) it ran what seemed to be fine till i changed any video setting in the game options. I run a 1080p setup running through an HDMI cable with xfire mode. I set the game to 1920x1080 and as soon as I click apply the game would crash. I changed everything from past experiences of installing and running this game as well as used compatibility mode of both win xp sp2 and win vista sp2 and after I did this and tried to start the game it was popping up an error that it could not find steam. I found this forum cause I couldn't find ANY way to contact Steam about the issue directly and tried Church's suggestion. I copied both dll files into cod2 install folder and I now can start campaign and it fixed the game from not being able to find the steam client however, just like mz.hutch's issue. as soon as the game starts to load It stops responding and all I get is my background image in a 800x600 resolution configuration. All i wanted to do is play mp on the old servers i use to play on and now I can't even run the game. Can anyone help to figure this issue out?
Thank you,
TC

yes I am having the same exact issue as tlc above. I did catch an error message once stating the "the requested action requires elevation" or something like that..

hey ya know what, as I was logging in to this forum and posting my previous comment, I had left the game in the current state of frozen as described above.. After about 10 minutes of idleness just showing my desktop image in a 800x600 res, the game all of sudden launched! This is obviously not ideal but I have launched the game a few times after this and it seems to launch a bit quicker each time. Give it a try.
