What is downloading? (.iwd files)

Hi everybody. I just bought CoD2 and try to play multiplayer. But whlie i was trying to join to game, it started to download something with .iwd extension?

One time, iwd file was 150 mb in Russian server??? And after download, game interface language became Russian? I quit game then open, my language became English again?

What does it mean? What are these files and are they LEGAL to download? I don't wanna loose my steam account.

The servers have no protection on them. This means that you could be downloading viruses, etc when you download stuff.

Stick to main maps the game comes with, nothing with weird names, IMO.

omg.... OK, most CoD2 multiplayer servers are running mods like AWE, PAM, or Extreme or some custom maps. These all need to be downloaded to the client game folders in order for you to play on that particular server. There is no danger in downloading an iwd file. You can turn downloads on or off in you multiplayer options if you want.
