"DirectX(R) encountered an unrecoverable error"

Hi there, has anyone encountered this issue and do you have a solution for it?

Games have been running fine until today, when I got an error trying to load COD 2: "DirectX(R) encountered an unrecoverable error." After not finding credible solutions through Google, I tried completely reinstalling steam. Now I'm receiving the same error with COD2 and when I reinstalled F.E.A.R, I'm now getting "unable to initalize the renderer due to a valid video mode".

Any help would be appreciated!
