LOD Object Popping
Hey,

I've struggled to find much on this - but did manage to find a solution... or so I thought. I'm getting really bad LOD popping in COD2. Before now I had only ever played COD2 on the 360 back when it was released in '05, and although LOD popping was definitely a thing, I don't remember it being quite this bad. For example, just in the tutorial level, taking one step forward or aiming down the sight will make the sandbags flicker between many different lods, posts and vegetation will vanish, etc.

I found some console commands that apparently fix this, but they just don't seem to work/do anything. Those commands are "r_lodBias" and "r_forceLod". I even added "r_lodBias "-1000" to the config file - but upon starting the game it gets reverted to 0.

As it will be asked - I am running the game on Win10 at 21:9 (shocked that it was supported natively) completely maxed out.

Does anyone know of a solution to this? Or was this normal for COD2 in the first place?

Cheers.

I don't notice anything like that. Are you sure its not your video cards settings?

What settings would you suggest? I have tweaked a few video card settings that I thought would make a difference, (mainly switching from "recommended" SLI to a single card) but nothing has changed.

Could it be possible that the game just doesn't know what to do with a GTX 1080? …Even though COD1 and UO seemed to manage alright.

Well I'm completely stumped then, aha.

Find a config on the internet. Optimize game to your liking by tweaking MPconfig. Plenty of guides out there. There is an old site stillup that had server support and configs. fpsadmin.com

Here is another old guide that I used years ago. It has explainations http://www.tweakguides.com/COD2_9.html

Thanks, although I had already been using those websites. All I could find was "r_lodBias" - putting that in the config or typing it in the console did nothing. It reverts to "0" from "-1000" (even though it says in the console that it goes back that far).

I have also gone online (same issue there), but only really bought the game for SP.

I tweaked the graphic to the maximum, gave better AF, better AA, more dynamic lights etc. thanks to this tweakguide, but lod popping is something I couldn't change. I guess they blocked it after some time for multiplayer reasons. Still it tears my heart seeing all these tank models suddenly getting less detailed after I go a couple of metres away from them. Maybe all soldiers were shortsighted during 1940-1945 era?

3 year old post but if anyone still has this issue here is the fix. https://www.moddb.com/downloads/call-of-duty-2-single-player-improvement
There are 2 files in the RAR archive one replaces the original .exe and the other is a replacement dll file.

"This is a modified CoD2SP_s.exe (v1.2 latest version) executable for Call of Duty 2 single player where the console is enabled by default, field of view (fov) is changed from the default 80 to 90 and the nocd patch is applied. Also included is a modified gfx_d3d_x86_s.dll where r_lodBias (level of detail) is changed to the max distance which prevents all those annoying visual popups in the distance."

Thank you this worked great! LOD is no longer annoying.
