looking for a 1990s game like this?

hey guys!
I remember playing a similar game to this in the 90s.
I figured somebody here might know what im talking about?
I remember it only ran in 800x600 or even 640x480 res, but in full screen.
I think it was an 8bit or 16bit DOS game

2D top down shooter
coop support (shared keyboard)
youre fighting insectoid aliens, all sorts of bugs
i distinctively remember some big fat slow bugs 10x the size of the players, that once you brought down popped open and had 10-30 tiny bugs come out that would race towards you at very high speed
and i distinctively remember that once you died, it would show you the scores in front of a background that was essentially a huge pile of bugs with a human skull in it that was completely clean, had all its flesh gnawed off by the bugs

It was highly addictive and I remember playing it for hours on end with my buddies haha

nono, i mean a TOP DOWN shooter similar to crimsonland
and it was super dark and creepy, probably inspired by ALIEN
scifi setting, insectoid alien bugs and beetles...

but no, the game im looking for was much darker, and there wasnt much of a level
it was an endless wave of enemies coming from all sides

the first one looks similar...
was there a multiplayer map or mod?
i dont remember any single player gameplay, and there wasnt a map youd walk through, it was just one big open space, youre in the center, and beetles and aliens moved in from all sides, first very slowly then more and more.
there were very few walls and obstables, it was mostly an open space
and once every now and then powerups and health would spawn on the map randomly, including auto aiming machine gun turrets and flame thrower turrets

It must be the game Crimsonland. It's on steam. I played it the whole evening on extreme hardcore mode and now my thumb hurt.

It probably won't be that game, but maybe Notrium, probably some early version of it?

thanks! while searching for notrium i found a screeenshot on google image search of a game called D-BUG which looks similar to the game im looking for.
it might have been a mod of D-BUG...
