Playing Multiplayer on Steam Deck?

My son and I are trying to play multiplayer. I have a gaming laptop and he has an OLED Steam Deck. We haven't been able to figure out how to play multiplayer. When I create a multiplayer game and he tries to join he gets a black screen and can hear menu music. When he creates a multiplayer game and enters it he get a black screen with no sound. Any help? We aren't very savvy on gaming.

Is he able to launch it and get visuals on his steam deck? I don't own one myself, but the store page says that while it is playable on steam deck some features might give him trouble. Maybe check for some sort of software update as well if possible

He can play just fine on solo. It’s just when he tries multiplayer whether I create the game or he does all he gets is a black screen.
