I think your understanding of the modes seem correct.
Changing the setting and mode should be an easy thing to do with low commitment. IF you want to play in their mode for just a bit, you can change at any time.
As for different leader boards.
There are multiple settings in the game which affects your controls, but none of them will alter the leader board. Our reasoning for this is that most of the settings that help you in the beginning, like aim assist, or camera assist, is likely working against you when you get to really really high level of play. As at that point, you will want control over every single aspect. A slight automatic move of the camera can misalign your jumps and so on. Aim assist helps you aim at enemies, which to some players make it feel better to aim, but when at higher level of play you rather rely on the homing bullets and the explosion radius, so aiming straight at enemies are less desired.
We think an even bigger deciding factor is keybarod and mouse vs gamepad, but we do not feel like a players preference in this regard should limit what leader board they play on. If the game worked differently and had a different skill set it relied on, that decision might have gone differently.
Personally I feel like the mouse and keybarod likely have a bit of an advantage. Especially with blast jumps and such, but I still think it's best to keep the leader boards the same.
If we had many many more players, so the leader boards were overcrowded, having an option to filter on control method might have been nice. It's something we could consider tracking and storing in future games.
As for the overview. If rankings and leader boards are enabled, you should just have to hover a level to see the leaderboard. In the competitive mode you will also be able to swap between what info you want to display.
If you don't see thins in your level select, please make sure you are on the latest version of the game.
