Since it's usually understood that the pilot is missing, not the ship, then if the pilot survives, the counter shouldn't increase. Also, we know perfectly well what happened to the ship - it got blown to pieces ) Luckily, the pilot returned to tell the tale. I think that making this change would be a nice little touch to the game mechanics.
