How the hell do you beat Mr. Grub? (Lvl 22)

This is my first run on Normal and I haven't encountered too much trouble until this level. Mr Grub is the multi-piece dragon that pops out from underground. He just flies randomly all over the place and the only way I managed to survive for longer than one round is by using a nimble ship and copious amounts of time compression. Even with bullet time, it's difficult to predict which way any of the half dozen of pieces is going to fly. On top of that, I have to dodge the bullets he continuously throws at me.

I've tried homing weapons, front-focus weapons, and the VX laser all with similar success (I'm very very lucky if I survive the first round). What am I missing?

Doesn't he fly in a set pattern, always going top left the first time he emerges from his lair, top right the second, and then repeating? Maybe you could just fly in those corners after he leaves them and stay there until he reemerges.

I tried but failed to notice a pattern. It did seem that he alternated between left and right at first but too many deaths proved that theory wrong. On top of that, each piece seems to have its own pathfinding.

VX Laser does dmg to all his body parts and annhilates him.

So, use any piercing weapon.

had in upper 1 VX_masterblaster lazer, Mid section zombie blues plasma gun, and lower another VX. missles i use homing and in the rear Snowman 3000. bombs: autotron air. All fully upgraded.Did beat him on 1 st try withhin 3 mins. and ofc with the last ship u get.

I´ve noted that when I used a fully upgraded Daisy Cutter and Pink Panther against Mr Grub, his body kept splitting apparat and scattering across the screen. That is, his various body pieces began to take other patterns and routs than the rest of the body.

When I got fed up and restarted the level with a Railgun and the Alien Gun (Forgot the name, shoots homing blue skulls), his body never split and the fight turned out far easier.

When I used a Daisy Cutter & Pink Panther, I barely survived for mroe than 20 seconds.

When I used the other loadout, I survived for several minutes, almost beating him.

Edit: Wait, no. It still flies apart at random, albeit far less regularly and frequently.
