definitely needs more than just a few runs to get into it and it's pace.
it'll probably be fun with a group of 3 in discord coordinating where to go, what to do and what gear to drop.
The combat felt the same but something was slightly off, couldn't put my finger on it. It could be From's netcode adjustment to constant multiplayer. I feel like everyone is doubting this release when in my mind, anything more from this company is good in my book, and they're always good at what they do. My final decision is buy on release.
You have a 'home base' you can wander around in and interact with characters and do stuff (training area, a desk where you equip passive bonuses and so on), similar to Vermin/Darktide.
Once you go on an "expedition" (a match with 2 other players), you get dropped on a random spot of the map during the day. Objective is to explore, find loot, kill mobs and bosses to earn Runes and level up (or spend Runes on npc vendors scattered around).
When night falls, the "gas" starts covering the map. Gotta reach a safe spot which is suspiciously small... kinda like a boss arena... because it is. Kill the boss that spawns, and day will break. Day 2, repeat the first objective.
Then night falls again, a new safe spot must be reached where another boss will spawn. After slaying it, a portal appears to a final safe room with a npc vendor, a grace site and a weapon upgrade station, and a corridor leading to the final boss arena.
I had tons of fun. The preset characters are a bummer, compared to being freely able to build your character the way you want. However, the characters are different enough that it kinda makes up for it. They each have an unique passive ability and two active abilities.
Leveling up is linear (you just hit the button and your character's stats will increase according to their archetype - the birdman tank will increase his defenses and HP, the Duchess will increase dexterity and vigor, the witch increases intelligence and so on).
I played 4 sessions and only managed to win once. I guess everyone's still getting a feel for the game, and in one session I was playing with only one other player. Third guy must have dropped connection, or maybe some bug occurred because they both selected the same character (Wylder). I don't know if multiple copies of the same character are allowed.
One thing to note... one of the bosses I fought at nightfall was our dear Centipede Demon from Dark Souls 1. So they're already not shying away from giving us old bosses to fight.
The looting is rather battle royale-esque. Plenty of crates and chests to open, dropping assorted stuff like consumables, weapons, shields and so on. Items come in 3 rarities that I've seen. Common, uncommon and rare. If you find an upgrade anvil and have the upgrade material, you can bring your starting weapon up from Common to Uncommon to Rare, so you're not only relying on finding better drops. On the other hand, weapons you find lying around can have different level requirements, making them "almost" inherently better than what you start with. "Almost" because it also depends on what ability they have and how their moveset is, which may or may not be something you vibe with.
Slaying bosses drops a loot thing you interact with and select one reward out of three choices, kinda similar to roguelikes.
Overall I'm very pleased with what I've seen. Definitely gonna keep my eye on this game now.
As for repetitiveness, this being a live service game we can only expect/hope they'll update the game and add more content. And hopefully it won't ALL be paid DLC (Deluxe edition already promises "additional playable characters and bosses").
