The report that H.M. told the lead designer to "...do it as you please..." is absolutely damning. In a corporate culture that prides itself on teamwork and working together, to cut someone loose like that is pretty much turning their back on them and the whole project.
When you get right down to it, who is this game even meant for? It certainly won't please the traditional Rouge-Like folks. And it certainly is not going to please the traditional Souls-Like folks. I personally just don't see anything to like about this Frankenstein of a design.
I am not surprised that H.M. walked away from involvement with this project.
As for who this game is meant for... ER fans who want a faster-paced coop game with more replayability while still retaining the combat system and boss fights? There's certainly a lot of those people around, these are things people have been suggesting for ages... just separately. Nightreign is supposed to combine all of these requests together
Well, you need to understand Japanese culture to understand why what H.M. said is so bad. You cannot interpret it based on what westerners understand.
As for who the game is for, I don't know anyone that was asking to play a Rogue-Like Souls game.
* Pretend one of the Souls game IS currently a Rogue-Like.
* Start a brand new game.
* Play until you die.
* When you die, you get to keep all your gear (best case).
* BUT, you have to do EVERYTHING all over again. No skips. Endlessly.
Not for me, that's for sure. To please the Rogue-Like fans, it cannot be a Souls game. To please the Souls fans, it cannot be a Rogue-Like game. That's just the way I think the chips are going to fall.
How long do you think anyone will last doing that? Remember the crying and complaining when folks had to redo just part of the game to start the DLC?
Well, we will see. But I think this is one of those 'sounded good at the time' ideas.
They are experimenting. To me it sounds pretty exciting especially since replaying ER can be a chore sometimes considering how big the open world is.
I'm a souls fan, I'm a fan of rogue-likes and lites and I like playing stuff with friends. I never asked for this but I also never thought of this. Now that we're getting it I actually do want it so yeah.
Good Luck, All
Shame Miyazaki left us down with the disappointent called Ds3.
This size company does not invest in superfluous "...experimental side game..." products. And they don't just 'let' developers like H.M. take a 'back seat' unless they take a serious stand against working on a project.
I hope you find what you are looking for in this game. But I think as a Souls Fan, you will be seriously unhappy with the format. Even more so if you are not a serious fan of Rouge-Like designs.
Good Luck
"...so many people don't like the Elden ring..." ? ! ?
What reality are YOU living in. Certainly not this one.
Elden Ring is the single most popular Souls game ever produced. A lot of noise is made about other ones; but Elden Ring is the one that is most purchased, most played, by the most people.
I wouldn't even call Nightreign a souls game at all at this point.
It's merely a spinoff game that focuses more on experimenting with the typical souls formular.
