I read something on wired about how they "coudln't afford them" and they wouldn't "sound the same 20 years older." What the hell just use the same audio. Almost all the lines are the same anyway.
"Unfortunately the original recordings were lost and stripping the audio from the game did not result in acceptable quality. Because of this, rerecording was a necessity. The original actors are twenty years older—even if they were interested in reprising their roles, they probably wouldn’t sound like they did “back then”—and the cost of getting some of those actors wasn’t practical for the budget of this project. Recasting was our only option.
Unfortunately the Grace Nakamura in the first game is very different to the Grace in the 2nd game who is unintentionally a very dislikable character, not helped by a lazy actress who did zero research for her role.
I don't really get the point of asking people their opinions and then insulting them.
For myself I've struggled with a lot of things about the remake. The voice actor for Gabriel in particular I found unbearable the first time I fired it up. I ended up walking away for quite a bit. But having come back with Tim Curry's Gabriel a little further out of my memory I'm now inclined to be a little more generous to his replacement. It's not the best performance ever but I've heard far worse. In general I think I'd score the original voice work higher just for it's consistency. Yeah TC overplays Gabriel a bit, but the voice work all comes together to form a whole cloth (bar possibly the fortune teller in the park, I remember that one really bothering me). The remake by and large has solid performances, but the one or two jarring exceptions I find really hard to understand making it in. Back in the day they had one shot with expensive voice actors in an industry known for slightly camp/OTT performances. The whole point of the remake was to make a definitive version that did things right. I find it difficult to then square that someone sat in the sound editing booth and then said; "Yeah, that nailed it.". Especially with performances like the one you've already highlighted with Wolfgang.
Also this;
I loved the original snarky Grace. The new one just falls a bit flat for me.
Tough farther the game I got, the more used I got to him. Either he got better as the VO recording got, or I just grew to accept him .
The music is way too loud at the police building by far
Lots of bugs, the head spinning was my favorite.
