The only way I can imagine Gabriel Knight to continue is through some kind of fan project. But then we still have the problem that Activision owns all the rights.
i used to loooove adventure games, i've played all the classics and many modern ones as well. but i have to admit that nowadays (if its not a classic i just want to replay for nostalgia) i really cant deal with solving the mostly illogical puzzles. i love the stories but having to do the classic point and click puzzle solving and running back and forth and just trying combinations feels like such a waste of time to me now and is no more fun. i think that is why they are dead.
to me the desire of having to THINK in games is filled by grand strategy games and the desire for great stories is filled by rpgs. both of these i think fullfill that need better than any new adventure game.
in my heart i still love the classics though (thats why im still prowling these forums every now and then ;) )
Sins of the Fathers also has some really annoying parts. I guess I would've never found the 20 dollars (or at least I would've needed much more time) without the walkthrough I use if I'm stuck at some point. And there are more examples like this.
People just don't want to waste time with "try & error"-stuff.
Many classic adventures offer great stories but the gameplay never got to "the next level".
I enjoy using my brain in games but "try & error" is simply annoying.
