How in the world do I beat the second level? I keep on getting killed by a spike block next to the flag! Aargh!

I think you need something that gives you height to avoid the spike block.

You have to carry something to protect yourself before the spike block lands.

I finished that puzzle by tossing out something to distract the item-throwing girl, who normally throws the spike which prevents you from winning, just long enough to safely touch the flag before she could launch the dreaded spike itself.
