Yeah, sounds like a good idea.
More use for those companions you find that only have various sea skills and nothing else.
It seems a good idea. You already have clan roles for other important positions, why not naval?
We have specialized companions in sailing skills so it looks like the sailing clan role is meant to be in the game but just wasn't for what ever reason. It seems like taleworlds wasn't very cautious about the war sails dlc. They just made a dlc from what they are currently working on to gather money, but hopefully they are focusing on m&b 3, and that's why this last dlc was so sloppy with tons of bugs. There are so many things that could be improved in the game, start gaming on youtube made a great video about what could be improved and there's still a lot that vould be added.
+1 from me,

I vote Yay.

I was thinking a few days into playing war sails that there should be 1-2 more roles and it should 100% be oceanic / sailing related
Well, not "Admiral" but Boatswain or Shipmaster or something like that, yeah.
Yeah great idea, plus update all the old nobles/companions with mariner skills
I don't see any need to give seafaring skill point gain to someone else.

True unless player do not had anymore force point or take long time level to get new force point, follower might had better after you trained max out at that point. can't train beyond unless you had force point and attribute points push limited, but main level is max out 62, it's take almost forever to get 62 level.
But correct me wrong, I recalled follower do gain level in ship skills as main player gain skill level, come to think, if role gave, would they nerfed, only one person gain sea skill leveling if we get role? No role meaning, all follower get/share sea skill level together, that would be far better?

my main reason for thinking it was that i don't have any focus points in any of the sailing skills because i saw that when i was recruiting companions, their sailing skills were showing up and i just assumed that i could recruit a good sailor and get at least a few naval bonuses if i recruited him, and then i would have saved focus points to spend in other skills, but i later found out there's no good way to utilise companion sailing skills.

good point, for your 3 companions that you create parties with, it would not really matter for them because they would just gain their own sailing skills from wandering about the map. i mainly just wanted a role for the main party bonuses like scouting, engineering etc.

i'm open to opposing ideas from people who don't like this, it was mainly just a discussion because i doubt it will be actually added :P

Hello egg and Damaged Dork!

Potential benefits of adding the role

If developers (TaleWorlds) or modders added an Admiral (or “Navigator/Master-at-Arms”) role, it would likely solve several gameplay gaps:
  • Fleet management: It would allow a companion’s Shipmaster and Boatswain skills to provide party-wide bonuses to ship speed, cargo capacity, and crew morale.
  • Training gains: An Admiral role could amplify the effects of perks like Veteran’s Wisdom, which provides daily XP to naval skills for everyone in the party.
  • Specialized AI: Assigning a companion as an Admiral could theoretically grant them better tactical autonomy in the new Auto-Resolve Naval Battles or when leading a sub-formation of ships during a boarding action.
Conclusion: Adding an “Admiral” role would be a significant quality-of-life improvement. It would allow players to focus on their own combat or leadership skills while relying on a specialized “Seafaring Companion” to handle the technical complexities of maritime travel and naval combat efficiency.

In the War Sails expansion (v1.3+), the idea that companions “share” skill levels automatically as the player levels up is a common misconception. In reality, companions only gain naval skill XP if they are actively using those skills or have specific training perks active.

How Naval skill leveling works in v1.3 (2026)
  • No Passive Shared leveling: Companions do not automatically match the player’s level in Mariner, Boatswain, or Shipmaster. Just like standard combat or party skills (Medicine, Scouting), each companion must earn their own XP by participating in naval actions or holding a specific role.
  • Current v1.3 leveling Methods:
  • Sailing & Storms: The party gains Shipmaster XP simply by traveling on the sea, but Boatswain XP is primarily earned through hull repairs after taking damage (e.g., in storms).
  • Veteran’s Wisdom perk: This is the closest thing to “shared leveling.” If you (the player) have the Veteran’s Wisdom perk, your companions receive a daily XP bonus to their naval skills while they are in your party.
  • The “Admiral” Role Dilemma:
  • Current System (No Role): Currently, seafaring companions are often “wasted” because most of their perks only apply if they are the Party Leader of a separate fleet. If they stay in your party, their high naval skills don’t benefit your flagship because there is no designated “Admiral” or “Navigator” slot.
  • The Potential Shift: If an “Admiral” role were added, it would likely function like the Surgeon or Engineer roles. This would mean:
  • Benefit: One companion could finally use their own high naval skills to boost your fleet’s speed and repair efficiency.
  • Leveling Impact: Only the companion assigned to the role would earn the “active use” XP. Other companions would still need to rely on passive training perks (like Veteran’s Wisdom) to level up their sea skills.

Conclusion:
The current system does not allow followers to “share” sea skill levels together. In fact, many players find seafaring companions nearly useless in v1.3 because their high stats don’t apply to the main party. Adding an Admiral role wouldn’t “nerf” the leveling for everyone else—it would actually make hiring those companions worth it by finally allowing their skills to function for the player’s fleet.
