They just released a huge update to the beta (preview) branch today.
It's not like quickly recruit a bunch of dudes and fight fight fight though. Recruiting more companions (villagers), require you to build standings with towns (well, more like villages), and they cost renown to hire. Renown you get from doing quests, fighting bandits, and making trophies. The cost will keep increase the more you recruit. You can later fire/boot a companion with bad stats and get your renown cost back, then use it to hire someone better. Quality of people you can hire depends on the standings you have with the towns.
It's sort of like Medieval Dynasty just with much more combat and better quests/story.
Wartales is more tactical turn based strategy game with rpg elements. Quite far from Bannerlord
Kenshi.
