Conquer independant town (rebels) as a Mercenary?
What will happen if one captures an independent town while working as a mercenary? Will the lord I am working for give it to one of his lords or do I keep it? I know how this worked 3 years ago (you would keep it), but not sure on the current version.

If you are hired by a faction, the fief will be treated as belonging to that faction. You'll lose it unless you become a vassal. If it does let you keep it, you would be at war with the faction after you left.

Resign your mercenary position just before you attack the rebel town. Then you can keep it if you take it.

Yes, I am aware of that but then I will have few, if any, lords to fight, correct?

Nope. You will only have your own party untill you form a kingdom of your own.
Mercenary works for gold only.

Or rejoin your old kingdom, this time as a vassal (assuming you did take the rebel town). They won't hold it against you that you resigned as a mercenary.

Or join another kingdom, also as a vassal.

To add to this. If you are not a mercenary nor part of a faction, either one you founded or joined, you can keep the fief. No one will attack you, you will not need anyone to help you fight. It is more or less "cheesy" as the game does not have the coding to recognize you as a faction unless you found or join one. This means you can stay out of factions and grab every rebel town on the map.

I once played a game like that. By the time I stopped playing like that I had 12 towns scattered around the map. It was boring since no one could attack you, but it is useful to build income. Eventually, after I had trained skills and had a top notch party, I joined Battania as they had only one fief left. Four of the towns I had were in Battania. By joining them, they instantly got all the fiefs and were back in the game. That was interesting to bring them back from near death and beat back the Vlandians.
