Buy low and sell high and you level your trade pretty fast.
You need a lot of smithing materials to do this.
You catch a caravan near a city (close, so no need to move to talk) and pause the game. and then just:
1. Sell crude, wrought, iron, steel, fine steel to caravan (at a loss, they don't have moneys).
2. Enter the city sell damascene steel on the market. It will crater the prices.
3. Get out, buy back #1 from caravan. Cheap.
4. Enter the city, buy your damascene steel back. It will rise the prices.
5. Exit, sell #1 to caravan at huge profit (still a loss, but game counts the individual profit per item, so you get your XP).
Rinse and repeat.
I used it in my current playthrough (only difference I used steel to sell to city instead of Damascene steel) and it worked just fine.
